Prevention begins with the "no touch, no talk, no eye contact" rule when greeting your puppy, which keeps them focused on ground-level scents rather than jumping. Mouthing, like chewing, is how puppies naturally explore their world and doesn't necessarily indicate aggression. However, allowing a puppy to "play-dominate" with its mouth establishes a control pattern that becomes dangerous with adult teeth. With his puppies, Cesar allowed gentle mouthing but corrected increased pressure by cupping their necks or heads in a "claw" shape mimicking another dog's mouth correction. Housebreaking isn't complex because nature works in your favor. Most issues occur when owners don't maintain schedules, fail to properly sanitize accident areas, or react emotionally to damaged property. Dogs don't understand monetary value but clearly sense negative energy directed at them. Prevention is key-keep unsupervised puppies in safe, contained, easy-to-clean areas until their elimination habits are established. Dogs don't understand names as part of identity-they master associations between sounds and desired actions. They recognize names relative to how, when, and why they're communicated, especially the energy behind the words. This is why Cesar advises never using a dog's name when correcting it, only during positive interactions. The transition from puppyhood to adolescence varies by breed, with smaller dogs maturing sooner than larger ones. Signs can appear as early as sixteen weeks or as late as eight months. At six months, Angel began humping behaviors while maintaining his puppy-like demeanor-the canine equivalent of early curiosity. True adolescence typically begins around eight months, lasting until two to three years of age, when a dog's body is nearly full grown but the brain still developing. This challenging period sees previously well-behaved puppies testing boundaries, like Chris's wheaten terrier Eliza who began selective interpretation of commands. Sadly, eight months to two years is the main age when dogs are surrendered to shelters as owners struggle with these new challenges. Adolescent dogs undergo significant physical changes that drive behavioral shifts: permanent teeth finish coming in, triggering a second destructive chewing phase; rapid growth can cause actual growing pains ranging from mild to severe; defense drives develop, potentially resurfacing earlier fears as shy or aggressive behaviors; unstable joints and growth plates become susceptible to injury, requiring limits on vigorous activities; and older dogs begin holding adolescent dogs more accountable than they did puppies, creating new social conflicts. Even with good puppy training, they'll fixate on female scents and track them obsessively. Signs include swelling, discharge, frequent urination, and flirtatious behavior like standing still with tail raised. This hormonal surge creates tension that can manifest as aggression if mating urges remain unfulfilled. The mating drive is nature's second most powerful urge after hunger. When unfulfilled, it creates tension that can trigger serious aggression. While dogs in rural settings like my childhood Mexico mate freely on nature's schedule, American dogs have the desire but not the opportunity due to our lifestyle and leash laws. This makes spaying and neutering the only ethical choice for non-breeders. Six months is ideal timing-after major growth but before hormones dominate behavior. Despite myths, the procedure doesn't change personality, stunt development, or cause obesity. Instead, it prevents cancers, hernias, marking behaviors, and the psychological suffering of sexual frustration while making dogs more manageable and trainable. Maintaining consistent energy is essential during adolescence, especially when dogs test boundaries. Martin Deeley advises returning to earlier training stages-using crates, restricted areas, and house leashes to prevent destructive behaviors and housebreaking regression. Trainers emphasize following through calmly and consistently without empty threats, and never putting dogs in situations where they can ignore commands. The foundation of rules established during puppyhood becomes crucial for guiding dogs through this challenging developmental phase.
