He won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, helping popularize deeply reported literary nonfiction.
John Tracy Kidder was born in New York City in 1945 and educated at Deerfield Academy and Yale, where he studied English. After Yale he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, an experience that deepened his sense of character, hierarchy, and moral consequence. He later attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where literary craft and reported narrative began to fuse in a lasting way. One of the decisive turning points in his career came when he committed himself to immersive nonfiction: close observation, patient interviewing, and a willingness to spend long stretches inside the lives and workplaces of other people.
