Nacido: February 18, 1931 – Lorain, Ohio, United States
Toni Morrison was an American novelist, essayist, and editor whose work explored Black life, memory, identity, and power in the United States. Her best-known books include Beloved, Song of Solomon, and The Bluest Eye. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Toni Morrison was born Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, in 1931, the daughter of working-class parents who filled their home with stories, songs, and a strong sense of Black cultural inheritance. She studied at Howard University, where she encountered a wide Black intellectual tradition, and then earned a master’s degree in English from Cornell University. After teaching at Texas Southern University and Howard, she entered publishing, a decisive turn in her career. At Random House, she became one of the first Black women editors at a major American publishing house and helped bring broader attention to writers such as Angela Davis, Toni Cade Bambara, and Gayl Jones while deepening her own literary ambitions.
