Tahereh Mafi is an American novelist whose work centers on young adult fantasy, dystopian fiction, and romance. She is best known for the bestselling Shatter Me series and has also written Furthermore and Whichwood. Her books have been widely translated, helping her build a large international readership.
Tahereh Mafi built her career through a largely self-directed apprenticeship in reading and revision. Born in Connecticut and later raised in California, she graduated from University High in Irvine in 2005 and from Soka University in 2009. After college, she considered further academic study, but exhaustion with formal schoolwork pushed her back toward reading for pleasure. Immersing herself in young adult fiction, she wrote several unpublished manuscripts before finding the voice that became Juliette Ferrars in Shatter Me, her 2011 breakthrough. That debut immediately marked her out for lyric prose and a fragmented narrative design that mirrored the isolation and instability of its heroine.
