L. David Marquet is a former U.S. Navy captain, leadership consultant, and speaker focused on intent-based leadership, organizational culture, and high-performance teams. Drawing on his command of the nuclear submarine USS Santa Fe, he wrote Turn the Ship Around! and Leadership Is Language, works that have shaped leadership training in business, education, and the military.
L. David Marquet’s eventual career as a writer grew out of a much earlier vocation. As a teenager, while spending a summer with his grandparents in Pittsburgh, he discovered Samuel Eliot Morison’s naval histories in a library and fixed on the idea of commanding a submarine. He went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy, later earned a master’s in engineering management from Old Dominion University, and spent 28 years in the U.S. submarine force. The defining turning point arrived when he was redirected to command USS Santa Fe, then near the bottom of the fleet in retention and operational standing. After his crew attempted to carry out an impossible order simply because he had given it, Marquet concluded that blind obedience was not a strength but a liability.
