Kate Kelly, the activist, human-rights lawyer, and author of Ordinary Equality, built her writing life out of advocacy, legal training, and public argument. Born in Arizona and raised in a Mormon family, she studied political science at Brigham Young University, where she organized a campus free-speech protest and began writing for the left-leaning Mormon Worker. She later earned a J.D. from American University Washington College of Law in 2012, bringing together religious experience, constitutional interests, and international human-rights work that would shape her public voice.
