Jennifer L. Armentrout emerged from rural West Virginia, where reading and storytelling became early forms of escape. She has said that her first serious attempts at fiction happened in ninth-grade algebra, when she spent more time drafting stories than doing math. In college, she studied psychology and sociology with a criminal-justice track, training that later shaped the social tensions and emotional realism in her fiction. She began pursuing publication in earnest in the late 2000s, submitted work around 2009 and 2010, and entered the market through a small press rather than a conventional big-house debut. Her breakout years followed quickly: the Covenant and Lux novels established her in young adult fantasy and paranormal romance, while a steady release pace turned her into one of the most visible cross-genre commercial writers of her generation.
