Jason M. Satterfield is a UCSF clinical psychologist and professor of clinical medicine whose work spans cognitive-behavioral therapy, behavioral medicine, addiction, chronic pain, and medical education. His notable works include Minding the Body and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Techniques for Retraining Your Brain. His impact includes helping shape MCAT behavioral-science revisions and earning ABCT’s Book of Merit Award. ((https://medicine.ucsf.edu/people/jason-satterfield))
Jason M. Satterfield built his career at the intersection of psychology, medicine, and education. Trained first in brain and cognitive sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1990, he then completed graduate study in clinical psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his Ph.D. in 1995 before continuing his clinical training at the University of California, San Francisco. That path became the defining turning point of his work: rather than treating behavioral science as a separate specialty, he brought it directly into medical care. At UCSF he went on to serve as Professor of Clinical Medicine, Director of Behavioral Medicine, and Academy Endowed Chair for Innovation in Teaching from 2018 to 2023. His clinical and research interests have centered on mood disorders, chronic and stress-related illness, end-of-life care, smoking cessation, chronic pain, and substance use, especially where behavioral care can be integrated into primary care.
