James Scott Bell is an American novelist and writing teacher focused on suspense, crime fiction, and the craft of storytelling. He is known for Plot & Structure, Revision & Self-Editing, and Write Your Novel From the Middle, and is an award-winning author.
James Scott Bell’s career developed at the intersection of literary study, legal training, and popular storytelling. He studied writing at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he worked with Raymond Carver, then graduated with honors from the University of Southern California Law Center. Before writing full time, he practiced as a trial lawyer, a background that later informed both his fiction and his nonfiction. That combination of courtroom experience and literary ambition became a defining turning point: Bell moved from law into a full-time life of writing, teaching, and speaking, while also producing a search-and-seizure law book his site says is used extensively by lawyers and judges in California.
