Frans de Waal was a Dutch primatologist and author who explored primate behavior, animal cognition, empathy, and the evolutionary roots of morality. Best known for Chimpanzee Politics, Our Inner Ape, and Mama’s Last Hug, he helped popularize scientific debates about animal intelligence through influential research and widely read books.
Frans de Waal was a Dutch-born primatologist and writer whose books reshaped public and scholarly discussion about animal minds, emotion, and morality. Born in 1948 in ’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, he developed an early fascination with animals and trained as a zoologist and ethologist at Nijmegen, Groningen, and Utrecht. He received his PhD in biology from Utrecht in 1977 under Jan van Hooff. A decisive turning point came during his work with chimpanzees at the Arnhem Zoo, where he documented how opponents reunited after conflict. By naming that process “reconciliation,” he helped move the study of animal social life toward richer, less mechanistic interpretations.
