Sam Harris is an American philosopher, neuroscientist, author, and podcast host known for his critical examination of religion, ethics, and the nature of consciousness. His notable works include The End of Faith, which won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award, and Waking Up. His books are international bestsellers translated into over 20 languages.
Sam Harris, born in Los Angeles in 1967 to actor Berkeley Harris and television writer-producer Susan Harris, grew up in a secular household after his parents divorced when he was two. Though neither parent emphasized religion, Harris’s adolescence was marked by philosophical curiosity, which was catalyzed by a formative experience with the psychoactive drug MDMA while attending Stanford University. This event inspired him to explore the possibility of spiritual insight without recourse to drugs, leading him to leave Stanford and spend over a decade traveling and studying meditation in India and Nepal, deepening his exposure to Buddhist and Hindu traditions.
