Desmond Tutu

Born: October 07, 1931 – Klerksdorp, Transvaal, South Africa

Desmond Tutu was a South African Anglican archbishop and anti-apartheid leader whose work centered on human rights, reconciliation, and social justice. He chaired South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, won the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize, and wrote books including No Future Without Forgiveness, becoming a global moral voice.

Biography & Author's Journey

Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born in Klerksdorp, South Africa, in 1931 and grew up in modest circumstances shaped by segregation, Christian faith, and a strong respect for education. His father was a teacher and his mother worked as a domestic worker, and the family later moved to Johannesburg. Illness in adolescence and the barriers imposed by apartheid narrowed his early ambitions, but they also sharpened his moral sense. He trained first as a teacher, earning qualifications in Pretoria and through the University of South Africa, yet resigned from teaching when the Bantu Education system made racial inequality explicit in the classroom. That decision marked a decisive turning point. He entered St Peter’s Theological College, was ordained an Anglican priest in 1961, and later deepened his studies at King’s College London, where exposure to a wider church and intellectual world strengthened both his theology and his public voice.
