Born: October 11, 1926 – Huế, Thừa Thiên, French Indochina
Thich Nhat Hanh was a Vietnamese Zen master, poet, and peace activist known for pioneering mindfulness and Engaged Buddhism in the West. Author of over 100 books, including The Miracle of Mindfulness and Peace Is Every Step, his global influence includes founding Plum Village and being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Thich Nhat Hanh, born Nguyen Xuan Bao on October 11, 1926, in the imperial city of Huế, Vietnam, emerged as one of the twentieth century’s most influential Buddhist monks, teachers, and peace activists. From an early age, he showed a deep affinity for Buddhism, entering Tu Hieu Temple as a novice monk at just sixteen. His early years were marked by both rigorous spiritual discipline and a curiosity for the modern world; he was among the first monastics in his generation to study subjects such as literature and science outside traditional Buddhist studies, a decision that would later underpin his unique synthesis of ancient wisdom and contemporary relevance.
