Geboren: March 12, 1970 – Boston, Massachusetts, United States
Dave Eggers is an American author, editor, and publisher whose work spans memoir, literary fiction, and social satire. He is best known for A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, What Is the What, and The Circle. A Pulitzer Prize finalist, he also founded McSweeney’s and co-founded the literacy nonprofit 826 Valencia.
Dave Eggers was born on March 12, 1970, in Boston and grew up in both Boston and Illinois. He studied journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, but his early life changed abruptly when both of his parents died within a short period, leaving him, at 21, to help raise his younger brother, Christopher, known as Toph. After moving to California, he cofounded the satirical magazine Might and worked as an editor at Salon.com while writing for other publications. Those experiences, along with the trauma and responsibility of his family life, became the basis of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius in 2000, the memoir that made him a major literary figure and earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination.
