Brian Hare

Born: February 20, 1976 – Atlanta, Georgia, United States

Brian Hare is an evolutionary anthropologist and cognitive scientist whose work focuses on dog cognition, bonobos, and the evolution of human cooperation. A professor at Duke University, he is best known for The Genius of Dogs and Survival of the Friendliest, books that helped popularize research on canine intelligence and sociality.

Biography & Author's Journey

Brian Hare built his career at the intersection of anthropology, psychology, and animal cognition, but the roots of that work reach back to his early formation in the American South. Raised in Atlanta, he went on to Emory University, where he earned a B.A. in anthropology and psychology, with a co-major in human and natural ecology, in 1998. As an undergraduate, he worked with Michael Tomasello and began asking the comparative questions that would define his career: what do chimpanzees understand about other minds, and why are dogs so unusually skilled at reading humans? He pursued those questions further at Harvard, completing an M.A. and then a Ph.D. in biological anthropology in 2004 under Richard Wrangham before continuing research at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig.
