Nascido: May 22, 1859 – Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Arthur Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician best known for detective fiction featuring Sherlock Holmes, including A Study in Scarlet and The Hound of the Baskervilles. He also wrote historical novels, science fiction, and essays. Holmes became one of literature’s most influential and widely translated fictional characters.
Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on May 22, 1859, into an Irish Catholic family marked by financial instability but rich in storytelling and artistic temperament. He was educated at Jesuit schools before entering the University of Edinburgh Medical School, where he trained as a physician. One of the most important influences on his development was Dr. Joseph Bell, a professor known for drawing striking conclusions from tiny physical clues. Bell’s habits of observation and deduction later helped shape Sherlock Holmes. As a young man, Doyle also traveled as a ship’s doctor on Arctic and West African voyages, experiences that widened his world and sharpened his appetite for vivid, eventful narrative.
