The Fundamental Ambiguity of the Human Condition
We humans occupy a strange position in the universe. As "thinking reeds," we transcend our natural condition without ever fully escaping it. We are simultaneously pure internality against which no external power can take hold, and objects crushed by other things. We exist suspended between past and future, with our present moment seemingly nothing. Though we are sovereign subjects, we simultaneously exist as objects for others.
Throughout history, philosophers have tried to mask this fundamental ambiguity. Some reduced mind to matter or vice versa. Others established hierarchies between body and soul or promised immortality to deny death's reality. Their ethics typically pursued eliminating ambiguity by making oneself either pure inwardness or pure externality. Hegel attempted a grand reconciliation of all aspects of the human condition in an optimistic system where even bloody wars expressed the Spirit's fertile restlessness.
Today, this paradox feels more acute than ever. We've created atomic bombs capable of our own destruction, demonstrating both our grandeur and its flouting. Stalingrad and Buchenwald exist side by side in our history, showing humanity at its most heroic and most depraved. Rather than flee from these contradictions, Beauvoir argues we must look them in the face and draw strength from understanding our fundamental ambiguity.
Existentialism defined itself from the beginning as a philosophy of ambiguity. Kierkegaard opposed Hegel by affirming ambiguity's irreducible character, and Sartre fundamentally defined man as a being whose being is not to be. Yet critics claim existentialism traps us in sterile anguish and empty subjectivity, offering no principle for making choices.
All ethics begin by emphasizing some failure in the human condition-without failure, ethics would be meaningless. One cannot propose ethics to a being defined as complete nature. Ethics requires a being who questions himself in his being, who exists at a distance from himself.
To attain truth, we must not deny the ambiguity of our being but accept the task of realizing it. We rejoin ourselves only by remaining at a distance from ourselves. This existentialist conversion resembles Husserlian reduction-putting the will to be "in parentheses" to gain consciousness of our true condition. It doesn't suppress instincts or desires but prevents failure by refusing to set up ends as absolutes.

Freedom as the Foundation of Values
The genuine human being recognizes no foreign absolute. We abandon the dream of inhuman objectivity, understanding we must be right in our own eyes, not God's. Value appears because freedom makes itself a lack; desire creates the desirable. Human existence makes values spring up in the world. Before existence, there is no more reason to exist than not to exist.
Contrary to Dostoievsky's claim that "If God does not exist, everything is permitted," God's absence doesn't authorize license. Rather, without God, we bear complete responsibility for a world of our own making, where our faults are inexpiable. Our earthly destiny's importance depends on us alone-it is up to us to make it important to be human.
Critics charge existentialism with offering no objective content to moral acts, claiming it is subjective or solipsistic. But this is dishonest. The Cartesian cogito expresses both individual experience and objective truth. Existentialism continues the tradition of Kant, Fichte, and Hegel by affirming that values reside in human freedom. The world is not foreign to us but willed by us as an expression of our genuine reality.
Unlike Kant and Hegel, existentialism locates values not in universal man but in concrete, particular individuals projecting themselves toward ends from irreducibly particular situations. This presents the real problem: how can originally separated individuals come together? An ethics of ambiguity refuses to deny a priori that separate existents can be bound to each other and that individual freedoms can forge universally valid laws.
Marxism, like existentialism, rejects inhuman objectivity and recognizes the importance of situation. As radical humanism, it locates itself in the Kantian-Hegelian tradition. Marx doesn't consider certain human situations absolutely preferable; rather, human needs and class revolt define aims and goals. Values arise from within rejected situations through the will of humans.
Yet Marxism differs crucially from existentialism by viewing subjective will not as free but as reflecting objective conditions. Existentialists maintain that meaning surges from a free subject's disclosure through projects. Even to adhere to Marxism requires a decision sourced only in oneself.

The Child's World and the Serious Man
Human unhappiness, as Descartes noted, stems from having first been a child. The child finds himself cast into a pre-established universe that appears absolute, where values seem ready-made things. Though allowed to play freely within his limited circle, the child views the adult world as one where he can only respect and obey. Naively believing in the substantiality of parents and teachers, he internalizes rewards and punishments as evidence of objective good and evil.
This game of seriousness can become actual seriousness, with some children becoming caricatures of adults. Yet the child's condition remains metaphysically privileged, escaping the anguish of freedom. His acts weigh nothing upon the world; he exists in security through his insignificance, able to do whatever he likes with impunity since his acts engage nothing.
Some adults remain in this infantile world-slaves unaware of their slavery, women in many civilizations who adopt men's opinions without question. Women's "futility" often has charm precisely because it manifests the child's gratuitous taste for existence without seriousness. Yet when their protective structure is threatened, these seemingly light-minded women can become harder and more cruel than their masters.
The child's world rarely survives adolescence. From early on, flaws appear in it as the child questions authority with astonishment and revolt. Upon reaching adolescence, he discovers the contradictions and weaknesses of adults, who no longer appear godlike. He realizes the human character of reality-that language, customs, ethics, and values originate from uncertain creatures. Now his acts weigh upon the earth as much as others', and he must choose and decide. The collapse of the serious world is both liberating and confusing, as he finds himself cast into a world no longer ready-made but which must be made, abandoned to a freedom no longer chained by anything.
The serious man, refusing to recognize that he freely establishes the value of his ends, makes himself their slave. He forgets that human freedom is the ultimate end to which man should destine himself. He accords absolute meaning to words like "useful" which have no meaning without a complement requiring questioning.
For the serious man, the army, highway, or revolution become inhuman idols to which he'll sacrifice man himself. Ignoring the subjectivity of his choice, he pretends to assert unconditioned values, ignoring others' freedom and subjectivity. The colonial administrator who idolizes highways sacrifices native lives without scruple. This seriousness leads to fanaticism-of the Inquisition imposing beliefs through external constraints, of American Vigilantes defending morality through lynchings, of politics imposing the State against individuals.

Nihilism, Adventure, and Passion
When seriousness fails, nihilism often follows-deciding to be nothing when unable to be anything. The nihilist is close to seriousness, conceiving his annihilation substantially rather than as living movement. This appears in adolescence or after failed self-fulfillment attempts. Some nihilists maintain affection for the serious world they reject, like Baudelaire who scorned yet respected childhood values. Others go further, annihilating both the rejected world and themselves through lost causes, self-sabotage, or Dadaist incoherence.
This will to negation contradicts itself by manifesting as presence. If suicide is rejected, one slips into more stable attitudes. Even faithful surrealists found their negation becoming an ethics, their unruliness a rule, their revolt a career. Some genuinely returned to the positive, engaging in politics, art, or social life without losing themselves.
Nihilism can perpetuate itself only by revealing positivity at its core. Rejecting existence, the nihilist must reject others' existence, but this destruction becomes desire for power. Nazism exemplified both will to power and will for suicide, serving petit bourgeois seriousness while harboring dark romanticism.
The adventurer throws himself into undertakings with zest but remains detached from their ends, finding joy in spreading freedom indifferent to content. This attitude dialectically encompasses both nihilism's opposition to seriousness and existence's opposition to nihilism. The adventurer deliberately makes himself a lack of being while aiming at existence, giving himself to enterprises with indifferent ardor, seeking justification not in things but in activity itself.
Yet the adventurer's zest is not always pure. Many pursue secret goals in utter seriousness-fortune or glory-while proclaiming skepticism toward recognized values. This opportunism is the antithesis of adventure, lacking gratuity. Even genuine adventure often mixes with serious values, as with Cortez serving God while pursuing pleasure.
The passionate man represents adventure's antithesis. Where the adventurer fails to fulfill content genuinely, the passionate man fails to fulfill subjectivity. He sets up objects as absolutes disclosed by subjectivity, not detached like the serious man's. In amorous passion, one prefers the beloved unknown, believing appropriation greater if alone in revealing her worth.
The passionate man seeks possession, creating his own hell. He populates the world with treasures but also depopulates it, stubbornly fixed on his project, tragically dependent on objects that never fully give themselves. This inspires both admiration and horror-admiration for subjective pride choosing its end without bending to foreign law, horror at the solitude in which this subjectivity encloses itself.

The Aesthetic Attitude and Genuine Freedom
The aesthetic attitude emerges when one claims to have only a detached contemplation of the world, standing outside of time and apart from men. This impersonal viewpoint equalizes all situations, apprehending them with indifference to their differences, excluding preference. The history lover views Athens, Rome, and Byzantium with the same serene passion; the tourist regards arenas, palaces, temples, and prisons with identical curiosity.
This temptation appears especially among those burdened by a magical past or during times of occupation who sought to "take the point of view of history" and remain "aloof from the fray." But such attitudes appear in moments of discouragement and confusion-they are positions of withdrawal, fleeing the truth of the present.
While eclecticism toward the past is legitimate, the present demands choice and action. One cannot avoid living through a project, and there is no purely contemplative project. Those intellectuals who sought to rise above their age's drama were nonetheless its actors-their inertia played the occupier's game. We never merely contemplate; we do.
Freedom realizes itself only by engaging in the world, embodied in definite acts of behavior. To will freedom and to disclose being are the same choice. Freedom takes a positive, constructive step causing being to pass to existence in a constantly surpassed movement. Science, technology, art, and philosophy represent indefinite conquests of existence over being. This gives the word "progress" its true meaning-not approaching a fixed limit like absolute Knowledge or perfect beauty, but pursuing existence's expansion while retrieving this effort as an absolute.
Man's constructive activities gain valid meaning only when assumed as movement toward freedom. This movement is concrete: discoveries, inventions, industries, culture, and books people the world and open concrete possibilities. Perhaps someday all humans will use freedom only for this free unfurling of itself, with constructive activity possible for all. But today, some can justify their lives only through negative action.

Oppression and Liberation
Every person transcends himself, but oppression condemns this transcendence to fall uselessly back upon itself by cutting it off from its goals. Oppression is never natural-man is never oppressed by things, only by other men. The resistance of things sustains action as air sustains flight; man assumes the risk of setback without seeing it as denying freedom. Material obstacles may stand in the way, but man must assume even misfortunes. No destruction of a thing, not even death, constitutes radical ruin.
Only man can be an enemy for man, robbing him of meaning or confirming his existence. Interdependence explains why oppression is possible and hateful. My freedom requires an open future created by others. If they force me to consume my transcendence in vain, keeping me below their level, they cut me off from the future, changing me into a thing. Life must both perpetuate and surpass itself-mere maintenance is just "not dying." Oppression divides the world into those who thrust mankind ahead and those condemned to mark time supporting the collective through mechanical gestures.
The oppressed has only one solution: deny the harmony of mankind that excludes him and prove his humanity through revolt. Oppressors camouflage themselves behind "natural situations" since one cannot revolt against nature. Conservatives claim wealth distribution is natural, not theft, but revolutionaries reject this regime as a human fact.
All men need liberation-oppressors and oppressed alike. Sometimes slaves don't recognize their servitude when mystified into seeing it as natural or divine. Conservatives argue against disturbing this "peace," but liberation doesn't mean throwing men into an unchosen world. What's needed is furnishing slaves with means to transcend through revolt, ending ignorance.
The urgency of liberation differs-for the oppressed it's immediately necessary. The proletarian must fulfill his freedom through revolt since his situation prohibits positive development. While not naturally more moral than others, he has fewer temptations of betrayal since adventures and satisfactions are denied him. Meanwhile, the bourgeois and intellectual can use freedom positively while fighting oppression since their future isn't barred.

The Antinomies of Action
The liberating action faces a fundamental paradox: to be truly moral, it would require the conversion of oppressors, yet we cannot count on collective conversion. The oppressors embody facticity's absurdity, necessitating their suppression through violence-thus confirming the sad fact of human separation. Those who revolt against oppression risk becoming oppressors themselves, carrying the evil of division in their hearts. This cycle of oppression and resistance creates a complex moral dilemma where the means of liberation often contradict its ends.
This violence creates painful contradictions that extend beyond simple binary conflicts. We must sometimes destroy not just oppressors but those who serve them, whether through ignorance or constraint - the bureaucrats, the enforcers, even ordinary citizens caught in systems of power. Political necessity forces us to sacrifice certain valid causes temporarily, even fighting against them. For instance, revolutionary movements might need to suppress labor strikes or democratic protests to maintain stability during critical periods. Violence demands sacrifice not only of enemies but allies and ourselves-in war, revolution, or even states of "veiled warfare" where conflict operates beneath surface-level peace.
Tyrants throughout history have manipulated this dynamic, claiming that individuals find their true fulfillment by losing themselves in service to the collective. Leaders preach that one fulfills life through death and realizes freedom through servitude, condemning those who refuse as cowards or traitors to the cause. The young Hitlerians died joyfully because they were taught to consent to their sacrifice, believing their deaths served a greater purpose. Similar patterns emerged in Stalinist Russia and Maoist China, where individual sacrifice was glorified as the highest form of social duty.
But this solution is self-contesting and philosophically problematic. In Hegel's conception, the individual is merely an abstract moment in History's movement, a temporary vessel for the progression of the absolute spirit. If each generation is sacrificed to the next, human history becomes an endless succession of negations without meaningful resolution. Though Hegel speaks of reconciliation in absolute Mind, this creates fundamental contradictions-who is this subject that experiences the reconciliation? Subjectivity fundamentally means separation and individual consciousness.
Democratic societies have evolved to understand the need to affirm individual value through ceremonies and institutions that recognize personal worth. Rituals like baptism, marriage, and burial serve to acknowledge the irreducible significance of each human life. After periods of violence or social upheaval, these societies must carefully re-establish individual rights and dignity through legal reforms, truth commissions, and processes of reconciliation. Sacrifice maintains its meaning only when we recognize the irreducible value of each person-death is an absolute renunciation, not a negligible transition in some greater historical process. As Saint-Just acknowledged in a moment of stark clarity, "No one governs innocently." This admission reveals the inherent moral burden of political action, where even justified violence carries an inescapable ethical cost.

Living with Ambiguity
The concept of ambiguity differs fundamentally from absurdity. While absurdity denies existence can have meaning, ambiguity asserts meaning is never fixed but must be constantly won. Man's ambiguous condition drives him to save his existence through failure and outrageousness.
Action must be lived in its truth, conscious of its inherent contradictions. Like art or science, all human endeavors involve failure, yet this doesn't invalidate them. As Pierrefeu notes about war, no victory completely achieves its objective of total enemy annihilation, yet wars are still won or lost. Similarly, painting isn't fully realized in any single artist but seeks itself through centuries. Art concretizes itself in each work as absolute existence, establishing itself through failure rather than despite it.
Freedom must be achieved absolutely in aiming at itself, with each action forming a finished whole where present and future, means and ends reflect each other without sharp separation. This requires rejecting contradiction between moments of action. In situations where means would destroy an action's meaning, rejection becomes the only ethical option-as with the French Resistance, which affirmed freedom by unconditionally refusing the German occupation rather than "making the best of things."
Unlike the pharisee Kierkegaard describes, who takes his anguish as proof of virtue, the ethical person maintains an indefinite questioning. The tyrant rests in certainty about his aims, while the person of goodwill constantly asks, "Am I really working for human liberation?" Freedom must continually confront its means against the absolute end it constitutes.
Ethics provides methods rather than recipes. As in science, when pressure from facts bursts conceptual frameworks, one must invent new concepts. Similarly, when an action's content falsifies its meaning, one must modify the content while preserving the meaning-a judgment required in each specific case.
The individual must be one of our action's ends, aligning with Christian charity, Epicurean friendship, and Kantian moralism. This distinguishes this approach from abstract revolutionary politics that scorns concrete benevolence. Freedom has a concrete bond with existence-to will human freedom is to will the disclosure of being in the joy of existence. Production, wealth, and progress are meaningless if not retrievable as individual joy. If we don't love life for ourselves and through others, justifying it becomes futile.

An Ethics for Our Time
This ethics is individualistic in according absolute value to individuals and recognizing their power to found their own existence, like ancient wisdom, Christian salvation ethics, and Kantian virtue. Yet it opposes totalitarian doctrines that elevate the mirage of Mankind above actual people. It isn't solipsistic because individuals exist only through relationships with the world and others, achieving freedom only through others' freedom. One justifies existence through a movement starting within but leading outward.
This individualism doesn't create anarchy of personal whim. Freedom becomes one's law; we must assume rather than flee it through constructive action and rejection of oppression. We reconquer freedom from contingent facticity by taking what simply exists and making it willed. This conquest remains perpetually unfinished-the element of failure persists as a condition of life itself, demanding unceasing struggle rather than resignation.
Against objections that this endless struggle without victory is mere gullibility or illusion, we must recognize that such criticism positions itself in an inhuman objectivity. While individuals may be fooled, humanity cannot completely deceive itself since it establishes the very criteria of truth and falsehood. When people attach value to words, forms, colors, or each other, these things immediately have absolute value. Even those claiming to love nothing prove through living that some attachment to existence remains. This justification, though open to the entire universe, will always be finite-giving the doctrine its austerity.
Unlike Hegel's comforting system which offers the consolations of death under the guise of infinity, existentialism proposes no evasion. Instead, it offers the only possible salvation by asserting that despite our limits, through them, each person can fulfill their existence as an absolute. Despite our ignorance and weakness within the immense collectivity, we remain absolutely free if we choose to will our existence in its finiteness-a finiteness open to the infinite. As an old saying goes: "Do what you must, come what may." The result isn't external to the good will fulfilling itself in aiming at it.
