The final strand in commitment is the "have-to" component-beliefs about responsibility and obligation from first meeting to marriage. Every commitment contains moral responsibilities. The level of this strand corresponds with how responsible you feel to maintain the relationship, increasing incrementally from minimal obligations in new relationships (calling when promised) to the highest level in marriage. Over recent decades, radical changes in ethical obligations between romantic partners have created a widespread commitment crisis. More than half of marriages are now preceded by cohabitation-a dramatic increase from just 10% in 1974. While 62% of young adults believe cohabitation helps avoid divorce, evidence contradicts this belief. Statistics show cohabitation often leads to breakups (40%), higher divorce rates for those who eventually marry (similar to second marriages at 66%), lower marital satisfaction, higher depression rates, and greater instability for children born to cohabiting parents.

Sexual Involvement: The Final Bonding Dynamic

Research identifies two primary sexual trends among singles: "relational sex" where couples build a relationship with growing commitment before becoming sexually involved, and "recreational sex" or "hooking up" where sex requires no commitment beyond the encounter itself. Recreational sex is based on the popular belief that sex can occur without emotional involvement for both men and women. Despite popular belief, evidence consistently shows sex is always relational-even casual encounters have emotional consequences for both women and men. This happens because you cannot separate your body from your identity; what your body does, you do. Tiffany's story illustrates this principle. She claimed her casual arrangement with Derrick was "just sex" while simultaneously being hurt by his emotional unavailability and treatment outside their sexual encounters. Research shows the first sexual encounter creates a "passion turning point" that ignites a chain reaction of relationship changes. This act is typically the most frequently remembered relationship milestone. After first-time sex, people experience increased desire for emotional closeness coupled with heightened vulnerability and fear of getting hurt. This creates tension when sexual involvement exceeds the development of other relationship dynamics in the RAM, putting one at risk of emotional harm. Research by Jay Teachman studying over 6,500 women found that sexual involvement with partners other than one's eventual spouse significantly increased divorce odds-even accounting for family background, socioeconomic status, age, religion, race, and other factors. A woman with just one sexual partner besides her husband had divorce risks three times higher than women who only had sex with their husbands. Additional studies across multiple countries show that higher numbers of premarital sexual partners correlate directly with increased likelihood of extramarital affairs during marriage. Research by Cunningham and Antill found that restraint in sexual involvement actually leads to heightened, long-lasting love and romance in marriage. Their study revealed a direct relationship between number of sexual partners and decreased romantic feelings. Those with the fewest past sexual partners who didn't cohabitate and were married scored highest on ratings of love, satisfaction, sexual fulfillment, and romantic feelings. The trio of sex, love, and marriage creates the most fulfilling experience when kept together rather than separated. For those who recognize they've made mistakes in their past sexual relationships, there's an important message: you can change your future by changing your present perspective and actions. You aren't enslaved by your past. While some may be skeptical about changing their sexual lifestyle, the evidence suggests that sex, love, and marriage truly do belong together.

Finding your ideal partner doesn't have to be random or haphazard-you can follow a plan that guides both your head and heart. While social and family forces no longer primarily guide partner selection, you're not without a roadmap. Dating should be fun, safe, and effective-profiting your future marriage rather than damaging it. While choosing a partner is complex, there's no need to despair. As a pacemaker in your romantic relationships, you can set a pace that gives you enough time to explore the five crucial areas that reveal what your partner is truly like. The RAM provides a visual framework to help sort through mixed feelings while building safety and confidence. What's needed now are trendsetters willing to be pacemakers in their dating relationships-people who will use a more systematic approach to harness those powerful feelings of love on the journey toward marriage. By maintaining balance among the five bonding dynamics-knowing, trusting, relying, committing, and sexual involvement-you create a safe zone where love can flourish without becoming blind. The journey to finding your perfect match begins with becoming your best self, understanding your own patterns, and developing clarity about what you truly need in a partner. From there, you can explore the five areas that predict relationship success: compatibility, communication skills, relationship patterns, family background, and conscience. With patience and wisdom, you can find someone who not only captures your heart but deserves your trust-a true soul mate with whom you can build a lasting, fulfilling relationship.
