People fear public humiliation more than public speaking itself. To overcome speaking anxiety: 1) Know your point (anyone without one should be nervous); 2) Focus on delivering your point, not on yourself; and 3) Practice out loud to train your mouth and brain to collaborate. Only audience feedback confirms if you've successfully delivered your point.
In settings where others pressure you to address their points-whether as a conference panelist, TV guest, or with an opinionated dinner guest-remember that defending yourself against others' points takes time away from conveying your own. Use transitional "bridges" like "I hear what you're saying, but my point is..." to stay focused on your message.
When preparing speeches, avoid reading from scripts-this forces you to look down, losing crucial eye contact with your audience. Listeners remember points, not words, and reading can seem inauthentic. Instead, use smart notes that only remind you of key points and details you might forget, like statistics or names.
Don't treat your point like a climax or spoiler; bring it out early so your audience knows where you're taking them and why. When writing, the three-step test becomes even more critical-every sentence should contribute to your main point, and extraneous information should be ruthlessly eliminated.
In the digital age, readers skim rather than read deeply. This makes your written points vulnerable to being missed entirely. Use formatting strategically-bold your key points, create white space through paragraphing, and use headings to guide readers through your argument. The structure of your writing should make your point impossible to miss, even for someone quickly scanning your document.
Remember that written points leave a permanent record. While verbal missteps might be forgotten, written errors can be referenced repeatedly. This makes it essential to verify facts, check logic, and ensure your written points are defensible before sending them into the world.

Memorize the moderator's and co-panelists' names and use them frequently. This collegiality projects confidence, even if somewhat manufactured. Keep relevant statistics, case studies, and examples in mind and connect them explicitly to your points.
If you don't make your point early, be prepared to assert yourself. Treat the panel more like a dinner party than a spelling bee-turns aren't strictly observed. Use connectors like "Building on Sarah's point..." to insert yourself. Remember: if the session ends without you making your point, it's a wasted opportunity.
Meetings present their own challenges for point-making. Many professionals sit through endless meetings without contributing meaningfully, either because they're unprepared or unsure how to insert their points. Before any meeting, identify one or two points you want to make and look for natural openings to introduce them.
Don't wait for a perfect transition-create one. Use phrases like "I'd like to add something relevant to our discussion" or "This relates to our agenda item because..." to create your own opening. In virtual meetings, use the chat function strategically to signal that you have a point to make without interrupting the flow.
