They hid this income from the CHA to avoid losing benefits. Working men stayed largely out of sight for the same reason, sometimes leaving home for weeks to avoid inspectors. The women's underground economy wasn't particularly lucrative-selling food or candy might net $20 weekly, day care brought $5-10 per child per day, and taking in boarders generated about $100 monthly. More important than the money was the vast web of exchange where women borrowed, bartered, and pooled resources to survive.
