    Nia: Oye, Jackson, el otro día estaba viendo una serie de estas de cárceles antiguas y me quedé pensando en algo que leí sobre un diseño rarísimo, el panóptico. Es como una torre en medio de un círculo de celdas donde el guardia ve todo, pero el preso nunca sabe si lo están mirando. Me dio un escalofrío pensar que, al final, el preso termina portándose bien "por si acaso". ¿No te parece una forma muy retorcida de control?

    Jackson: Fíjate que eso es justo lo que Michel Foucault analizó hace ya décadas. Para él, ese diseño de Bentham no era solo una curiosidad arquitectónica, sino la metáfora perfecta de cómo funciona el poder hoy. Lo que pasa es que solemos pensar que el poder es alguien dándote un golpe o prohibiéndote cosas, o sea, algo represivo. Pero Foucault decía que el poder moderno es mucho más sutil: no te quita la vida, la gestiona.

    Nia: ¿Cómo que la gestiona? O sea, ¿me estás diciendo que el poder no es un "no hagas eso", sino algo que nos va moldeando sin que nos demos cuenta?

    Jackson: Tal cual. Él lo llamaba "biopoder". Ya no se trata de que un rey te castigue en la plaza pública, sino de un entramado de escuelas, hospitales y, ahora, algoritmos, que nos dicen qué es lo "normal". Al final, llevamos la torre de vigilancia en el bolsillo. Para entender cómo terminamos siendo nuestros propios guardianes, hay que empezar por ver cómo el poder dejó de ser un castigo para convertirse en una forma de producir quiénes somos.
