Many social sector organizations tacitly accept the flawed systems they're trying to address. A foundation aiming to boost financial security for low-income people offered coaching rather than addressing the underlying lack of money and opportunity. Similarly, DonorsChoose has raised $875 million for classroom supplies, but risks enabling an unjust system where teachers must fundraise for basics. While such organizations provide crucial "crutches," they should simultaneously push for system change.

You can't help thousands until you understand how to help one person. The social sector often follows a flawed "Pill Model" where interventions are treated like drugs-formulated, tested in controlled trials, then distributed unchanged. While testing is valuable, this approach hinders learning and adaptation. Instead, embrace the "Scoreboard Model" where teams own problems and receive continuous data feedback to adapt and improve.
