Just six weeks before meeting Percy, Frank attended his mother's funeral. Emily Zhang, a Canadian military officer, died while serving in Afghanistan. After the funeral, Frank's grandmother revealed shocking truths about their family heritage. Despite their Chinese ancestry, they had ancient blood connecting them to Rome. More importantly, Frank's life was tied to a piece of charred driftwood - when it burned completely, he would die.
"Your life depends on it," his grandmother had told him. "Keep it close. As long as it's safe, you are safe."
This vulnerability makes Frank cautious and hesitant, always afraid that an accident might ignite his lifeline. Yet when Mars, the Roman god of war, appears at Camp Jupiter and claims Frank as his son, everything changes. Mars assigns Frank to lead a quest to Alaska to free Death, giving him a spear with a dragon's tooth tip that can summon a skeletal warrior three times.
What truly sets Frank apart, however, is his hidden power - a rare gift from his ancestor Periclymenus, a grandson of Poseidon. Frank has the ability to shapeshift into any animal, though he struggles to access and control this power. As his grandmother explained: "It is the gift of our ancestor, the blood of Pylos. The gift has come to many Zhang women over the generations, but rarely to the men."
Throughout the quest, Frank gradually discovers his courage and embraces his unique abilities. When he finally entrusts his firewood lifeline to Hazel for safekeeping, it represents not just his trust in her but his growing acceptance of his own vulnerability and strength. His transformation from an insecure recruit to a confident leader becomes one of the most compelling journeys in the story.

The Quest to Free Death
The stakes couldn't be higher when Mars, the Roman war god, appears at Camp Jupiter and announces a dire situation: Thanatos, the god of death, has been chained by giants in Alaska. With Death imprisoned, monsters no longer return to Tartarus when slain, and some dead have begun walking the earth again. Mars orders a quest: Frank must lead a mission to free Thanatos before the Feast of Fortuna in five days, or Camp Jupiter will be overrun by a monstrous army.
"You will find Thanatos," Mars commands, "and you will free him. Return by sundown on June twenty-fourth, the Feast of Fortuna, or the camp will be overrun. The gorgons you defeated today? They've got plenty of sisters. The giants you hear so much about? They're stirring. Gaea's minions are preparing for war. The quest must succeed, or your camp will be destroyed."
The trio's journey takes them north along the West Coast, facing increasingly dangerous challenges. In Portland, they encounter Phineas, a blind seer who knows Thanatos's location but demands they capture a harpy named Ella in exchange for information. Instead, Percy challenges Phineas to a deadly game of chance involving gorgon's blood - one vial heals, one kills - gambling that Gaea values Percy more than Phineas. His gamble pays off, and before dying, Phineas reveals "HUBBARD GLACIER" as the giant's location.
In Seattle, they meet the Amazons, led by Queen Hylla, Reyna's sister. Hylla faces her own crisis - the resurrected first Amazon queen, Otrera, challenges her leadership nightly. Because Death is chained, Otrera cannot truly die and will eventually win. After a daring escape with the immortal horse Arion, who can run faster than sound, they continue north.
After a brief stop at Frank's grandmother's house in Vancouver (which ends with the mansion in flames), they fly to Alaska - the land beyond the gods. Here, Percy's powers weaken, and his memories continue to fade. After surviving an attack by gryphons and nearly drowning in a muskeg bog, they finally reach Hubbard Glacier, where they find Thanatos bound in icy chains and guarded by the golden giant Alcyoneus.
The final battle requires the ultimate sacrifice - Frank must burn his life-tied firewood to melt Thanatos's chains while Percy fights ghostly legionnaires and Hazel battles Alcyoneus. With Death freed and Alcyoneus dragged across the Canadian border (where he becomes mortal and can be killed), the trio races back to Camp Jupiter with the recovered legion's golden eagle standard, hoping to arrive before the camp falls to Polybotes' army.

The Battle for Camp Jupiter
Racing back from Alaska with the golden eagle standard, Percy, Frank, and Hazel arrive at Camp Jupiter to find it under siege. Polybotes, the giant born to oppose Neptune, leads an overwhelming force of monsters against the desperate Twelfth Legion. The scene is chaotic - the Fifth Cohort is surrounded, the aqueduct is damaged, and the Romans are on the verge of defeat.
Percy leads their strange reinforcements into battle - Hazel on Arion, Frank as an eagle, and Percy himself riding Mrs. O'Leary the hellhound with Tyson the Cyclops (who arrived unexpectedly) at his side. The golden eagle standard proves crucial, allowing Percy to summon lightning that obliterates the enemy's center line. Just as the tide begins to turn, the Amazons appear on the northern ridge, led by Queen Hylla, who has defeated Otrera permanently now that Death has been freed.
With the battlefield in chaos, Percy challenges Polybotes directly. Their duel is complicated by the giant's ability to turn water to poison, neutralizing Percy's natural advantage. Unable to kill the giant alone (as giants can only be defeated by gods and heroes working together), Percy devises a brilliant plan. He lures Polybotes across the Pomerian Line into New Rome, where the boundary god Terminus fiercely enforces rules against weapons.
When Polybotes knocks over Terminus's statue, the boundary god becomes furious. Percy charges the giant, driving Riptide into his chest, then smashes Terminus's stone head into Polybotes's face. The combination of demigod and god destroys the giant completely.
"That's for destroying my city," Terminus cries.
"And for Percy Jackson," Percy adds, "my friend."
As the battlefield falls silent, Romans and Amazons surround Percy, lifting him on a shield and chanting "Praetor!" Even Reyna joins the celebration, acknowledging Percy's leadership. The victory celebration becomes the Feast of Fortuna, with a lavish dinner attended by campers, Amazons, Lares, and even the helpful fauns.
Yet the war is far from over. As Alcyoneus revealed during their confrontation in Alaska, while his forces attack Camp Jupiter, his brother Porphyrion prepares for the real battle in Greece - "the source" where the giants plan to destroy the gods at their roots.

Two Camps, One Destiny
With his full memory restored during their return journey, Percy finally understands Juno's grand plan. The goddess has orchestrated an exchange of leaders - Percy was sent to Camp Jupiter while Jason Grace, the former praetor, was sent to Camp Half-Blood. If they couldn't, the giants would destroy everything."
The historical animosity between Greeks and Romans presents a major obstacle. For centuries, the two camps remained separate, with occasional violent encounters. Even at Camp Jupiter, the term "Greek" is used as an insult. Yet Percy, Frank, and Hazel have proven that cooperation is possible. Their successful quest demonstrates that Greek and Roman demigods can work together effectively.
During the senate meeting after the battle, Percy stands firm against Octavian's arguments against trusting the Greeks. He explains that Gaea is awakening and that Greeks and Romans must unite according to the Prophecy of Seven:
"Seven half-bloods shall answer the call,
To storm or fire the world must fall,
An oath to keep with a final breath,
And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death."
The prophecy suggests that seven demigods - some Greek, some Roman - must undertake a quest to close the Doors of Death, which Gaea controls. These doors allow her to choose which monsters and evil souls can return from the Underworld, giving her a tremendous advantage.
As the Argo II appears overhead, carrying demigods from Camp Half-Blood, Percy prepares to introduce his friends to his "other family." He has sworn his life on this alliance, knowing that if anything goes wrong, the consequences will be devastating not just for him personally, but for both camps and ultimately the fate of Western civilization itself.

Throughout their quest, the heroes encounter fragments of prophecies and ominous warnings that hint at greater challenges ahead. When Percy first meets Ella, she recites lines he recognizes from his own Great Prophecy: "A half-blood of the eldest gods, shall reach sixteen against all odds." This confirms his suspicion that she has somehow memorized the Sibylline Books, making her both incredibly valuable and potentially in danger from those who would exploit her knowledge.
Later, while in Frank's grandmother's attic, Ella reveals another partial prophecy: "To the north, beyond the gods, lies the legion's crown. Falling from ice, the son of Neptune shall drown-" before noting the rest is burned. This prophecy seems to foretell Percy's fate at Hubbard Glacier, though he ultimately survives the fall.
Perhaps most significant is the prophecy Ella recites before they leave for Camp Jupiter: "Wisdom's daughter walks alone, the Mark of Athena burns through Rome." This clearly refers to Annabeth, daughter of Athena, and suggests her crucial role in the coming conflict.
The Prophecy of Seven looms largest over everything. As Nico explains, reclaiming the Doors of Death will require a much larger force than their current trio - connecting directly to this prophecy about seven demigods who must answer the call. The line "foes bear arms to the Doors of Death" specifically points to the need for Greek and Roman cooperation.
There are also personal prophecies that shape individual characters' journeys. Frank's mother was told by a goddess that he would "close the circle" and bring honor to their family, but his life would burn bright and short. Hazel was told by her father Pluto that "a descendant of Neptune will wash away your curse and give you peace" - a prophecy that connects her fate to Percy's.
These interwoven prophecies create a complex tapestry of fate that the heroes must navigate, never knowing which interpretations are correct until events unfold. As Percy observes, "Prophecies are tricky. The more you try to avoid them, the more you play into them."

Throughout the quest, Gaea's presence looms as an ever-present threat. Unlike previous antagonists who directly confronted the heroes, the primordial goddess operates through manipulation, working through dreams, visions, and her many children to advance her plans. Her ultimate goal is nothing less than the destruction of Western civilization and the gods themselves.
"She's the most powerful being in the world," Nico explains. "She's the literal earth mother, the oldest goddess of all. She hates the gods because they took over the world from her children, the Titans. She went into a deep sleep for millennia, but she's waking now."
Gaea's strategy is methodical and patient. She first convinced her son Saturn (Kronos) to overthrow his father, then gave birth to giants with her husband Tartarus to challenge the Olympians. When the Titans were defeated the previous summer, it awakened Gaea further, leading to the giants being reborn to target demigods first.
Her manipulation of Hazel's mother seventy years ago nearly succeeded in resurrecting Alcyoneus ahead of schedule, but Hazel's sacrifice delayed those plans. Now, with Death chained and the Doors of Death under her control, Gaea can choose which monsters and souls return from the Underworld, giving her forces a tremendous advantage.
Gaea attempts to seduce Percy with promises of safety if he abandons his friends. When he refuses, she reveals her true intentions: "I will keep you alive, Percy Jackson, just long enough to see your precious world destroyed. Your blood will water the stones of Mount Olympus and wake me fully."
What makes Gaea particularly dangerous is her connection to the earth itself. She can manipulate the landscape, create deadly traps like the muskeg bog, and communicate through dreams whenever heroes rest on the ground. Even in Alaska, beyond the gods' power, Gaea's influence remains strong.
The giants, her children, each have specific roles in her plan. Alcyoneus guards her territory in Alaska and holds Death prisoner. Polybotes leads the attack on Camp Jupiter. And as they learn, Porphyrion prepares for the real battle in Greece - "the source" where they plan to destroy the gods at their roots rather than just in America.
As Percy realizes, Gaea doesn't want a quick victory - she wants revenge, suffering, and the complete destruction of everything the gods have built. Her awakening represents not just another battle, but potentially the end of Western civilization itself.

The Power of Friendship and Sacrifice
At its heart, The Son of Neptune is a story about the transformative power of friendship and the willingness to sacrifice for others. Each of the three main characters begins their journey isolated by secrets, fears, and insecurities, but through their quest, they form bonds that transcend their differences and give them strength to face impossible odds.
Percy, stripped of his memories and placed in an unfamiliar environment, could have chosen safety at any point. Instead, he repeatedly risks himself for others - carrying Juno across the highway despite the danger, saving Frank from the gorgons, and ultimately sacrificing himself at Hubbard Glacier to secure the legion's eagle. As Mars observes, Percy's fatal flaw is excessive loyalty to his friends, but this same quality inspires others to follow him.
Frank begins the quest believing himself inadequate - a clumsy archer whose life literally hangs by a thread. Yet when faced with the ultimate test at Thanatos's chains, he willingly risks his life force to free Death, understanding that some principles are worth dying for. His greatest act of trust comes when he entrusts his firewood lifeline to Hazel, placing his very existence in her hands.
"I trust you," he tells her simply, a statement that carries the weight of his life.
Hazel, burdened by her past and the knowledge that freeing Death might send her back to the Underworld, could have chosen self-preservation. Instead, she faces her greatest fear - returning to Alaska and confronting the giant she died trying to stop. Her initial sacrifice in 1942, sinking the island to delay Alcyoneus's awakening, demonstrates her willingness to put others before herself. Even in the Underworld, she chose to remain in Asphodel with her mother rather than enjoy Elysium alone.
Together, these three demigods from different backgrounds - Greek, Roman, and even from different times - form a powerful bond that transcends their individual limitations. When Percy reveals his Greek identity, rather than creating division, it strengthens their connection:
"You guys are my friends," Percy says. "We're a family. As far as I'm concerned, that's all that matters."
This theme extends beyond the main trio. Hylla risks her position to help her sister Reyna. Tyson travels across the country searching for his brother Percy. Even Ella, who has been abused and hunted, finds the courage to help others.
In a world where gods use heroes as pawns and prophecies seem to control destinies, the choices these characters make to support each other represent their true power. Their willingness to sacrifice for one another ultimately proves stronger than Gaea's ancient hatred or the giants' brute strength, suggesting that in the coming war, this same spirit of cooperation and self-sacrifice may be their greatest weapon.
