Despite his misgivings about channeling, Mat steps through, reasoning one more brush with the Power makes little difference. The doorway transports him to a star-shaped chamber where fox-faced beings grant his three requests but demand a steep price - memories and experiences they somehow extract from him, along with hanging him from the Tree of Life as payment.
