The ability to stand back and calmly observe our inner dramas without rushing to judgment is foundational for spiritual seeing-the primary form of "dying to self" that Jesus lived and Buddha taught. Western religion became preoccupied with telling people what to know rather than how to know, what to see rather than how to see. Contemplation keeps the whole field open, remaining vulnerable before the moment without creating false dichotomies. It's "full-access knowing"-prerational, rational, and transrational simultaneously. Jesus was the first nondual religious teacher of the West, but we've failed to understand his teaching because we approach it with dualistic minds. Despite the wisdom of the ages, religious leaders today often offer easy dichotomies to their followers. This provides certitude and authority but betrays the deeper tradition. When church workers haven't experienced spiritual transformation, religion becomes merely a career and church just something one "attends." Real transformation is neither called for nor desired, a pattern that has persisted for centuries across all religions. As Karl Rahner prophetically stated, "The devout Christian of the future will either be a 'mystic' or cease to be anything at all." The great mystics invite us to know better, drawing from our traditions to see beyond debate and order.

What is the goal of religions? Native and Eastern religions consistently aim for "harmony" and overcoming distinctions through conversions of mind, heart, emotions, body and will. By contrast, Western monotheistic religions adopted organizational models and verbal debate forms where one either wins or loses, is saved or unsaved. This created dynamic civilizations but often failed to produce harmonizing people or address social injustices. Monotheistic religions believe determining salvation is their business, perhaps as a means of control. Western religions prioritize clarity and strong identity, holding everything within one God and one explanation. While this made the West dynamic, it failed to produce the harmony-based values seen in other traditions. In Tibetan monasteries, novice monks undergo "consequentalist debate" training where they must identify all negative and positive consequences of Buddha's teachings. After each answer, older monks clap and smile in approval. The only way to lose is to stop smiling. This patient training in nonpolarity thinking teaches discernment without declaring perfect or wrong answers-a stark contrast to Western debate where someone must win and another lose. The goal isn't conceptual perfection but developing happy, loving, aware human beings. As TV therapist Dr. Phil asks couples: "Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?" Jesus never commanded rightness, yet Christians arrogantly believe their understanding equals his. As Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life"-suggesting that if Jesus is the Truth, we probably aren't! Consider how this insight might transform our religious and political discourse. What if we approached differences with the goal of understanding rather than winning? What if we valued harmony over being right? Many experience spiritual breakthroughs but never integrate the intellectual, lifestyle, and ethical implications. Conversion progresses from dualistic to nondual thinking-what we call contemplation. Wisdom is given, not taken; waited for, not demanded. This willingness comes at a price-passing through rings of fire most would rather avoid. Western religion has emphasized willpower (ego-affirming virtues) over willingness, which seldom affirms the ego. Great spirituality is always about letting go, and this happens through two paths: great love and great suffering. Neither can be willed or programmed. How often do we find ourselves rushing through life, checking items off our to-do lists, while missing the present moment? Our culture celebrates busyness as a virtue, but Jesus points to a different way-the way of presence. This isn't passive inactivity but rather a deep attentiveness that transforms everything we do.

Jesus: The First Nondual Teacher of the West

Jesus' sayings are beloved worldwide, yet their nondual message has been lost. Our dualistic minds struggle to accept that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine simultaneously-the very point of the Incarnation. We've emphasized his divinity while ignoring his humanity, despite Jesus referring to himself primarily as "ben' adam" (a son of the human one) eighty-seven times. Christianity's unique claim isn't just that God exists, but that God and humanity can coexist in the same place. Our task isn't becoming "spiritual" but learning to be properly human, as Jesus modeled full integration. Jesus taught from a consciousness different from religious leaders and masses who misunderstood him. His approach to prayer was primarily contemplative-seeking quiet and solitude rather than public display. He frequently went to "lonely places" to pray, spent forty days alone in the desert, and prayed privately before major events. Ultimate Reality cannot be grasped with dualistic thinking that eliminates mystery and the unfamiliar. Jesus communicated through parables, stories, and enigmatic riddles rather than clear systematic theology. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus teaches that the Kingdom is "not here and not there" but "within you," freeing us from attachment to specific times and places. The Gospel accounts show Jesus never requiring prerequisites for his healings-no group affiliation, moral worthiness, or ritual purity-only desire itself. Religious institutions often unconsciously maintain dualistic thinking to keep people insecure about grace, creating clear boundaries between "us" and "them." Christianity suffers from two fatal contradictions: First, believers are commanded to love unconditionally while God is portrayed as loving conditionally and exclusively. Second, under conventional teaching, humans end up being more loving than God, who appears petty, narcissistic, and easily offended. Jesus resolves this by teaching that God's love is absolutely unconditional-the foundational premise that makes everything work. We see Scripture through our level of development: punitive people find punitive texts, while loving people hear calls to discernment. God "swims in an ocean of mercy," making room for outsiders and sinners.

Lonergan recognized that religious people often have "an exaggerated view of the objectivity of truth" and their capacity to understand it. Ironically, Christians claim absolute truth from the start while scientists work with provisional theories. The path to true objectivity comes through healing our subjectivity-what Lonergan called "conversion." This process cleanses perception so we can see things as they truly are. Lonergan identifies three essential levels of Christian conversion: First, intellectual conversion moves us beyond mere sense perception into "a universe of being"-what we might call third-eye seeing. Second, moral conversion purifies our motives, shifting from ego satisfaction to seeking the true and common good even when it offers no personal advantage. Third, religious conversion occurs when we allow ourselves to live as "Being-in-Love," held and possessed by total, otherworldly love. This transformation into love is the heart of spiritual conversion, not merely joining a church or holding strong opinions. For Lonergan, "the new foundation consists not in objective statements but in subjective reality"-transformed people who see what's really there. The principle is simple yet profound: transformed people transform people-through attraction rather than promotion. When we encounter someone who has been genuinely transformed by love, something in us recognizes and responds to that authenticity. This explains why Jesus sent disciples to "fish for people," not merely defend concepts.

The Ego's Resistance to Change

Jesus' first message in the Gospels, often translated as "repent," is actually the Greek word metanoia-literally meaning "change your mind." This isn't a moralistic command but a strategy for enlightenment. People who embrace ongoing change continue growing throughout life, especially through difficulties. Yet ironically, religious groups formed in the names of change-demanding prophets often become defenders of the status quo. The ego resists change more than anything else, causing people to hunker down into mere survival-even acting against their own interests. The ego is fundamentally "the unobserved self," because once seen clearly, its game is over. To be effective, the ego must remain disguised, leading us to do harmful things without realizing it. Ego resistance creates the attitude that "one of us is wrong, and it's surely not me." Each religious group can recognize this pattern in others but not in themselves-fundamentalist Christians see it in Muslims, warlike Jews see it in Christians, radical Muslims see it in Jews. Religion should have done much better at enlightening its own adherents about this universal human tendency. The terms "liberal" and "conservative" represent useless polarity thinking. Unself-critical liberals protect themselves through suspicion judgments against authorities, while conservatives protect themselves through worthiness judgments against those they consider beneath them. Both create superiority systems. Heaven and hell are primarily states of consciousness, not geographical places of reward and punishment. As Simone Weil said, "God invites all the damned into paradise, but for them it is hell." Heaven exists now and forever for those willing to keep changing. The moment we change into communion, we enter heaven. True spirituality means keeping heart and mind spaces open, even in hell. Cardinal Newman recognized that "to be human is to change, to be perfect is to have changed many times." God seems totally committed to change-it's the universe's clear pattern.

Unfortunately, Christianity became belief-based rather than practice-based, losing the ability to decipher Jesus's paradoxical teachings that make no sense to dualistic minds. Over time, religious orders became institutional workers rather than transformative communities, morphing into "Churchianity" instead of Gospel living. The wisdom tradition became suspect to mainstream religion, which preferred systematic, defensible approaches. Contemplation declined significantly in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as Reformation-era defensive thinking pulled both sides into dualistic mentalities. Few reformers were mystics or reconcilers; most were trapped in judgments-precisely what contemplation transcends. Thomas Merton, the American religious prophet of the twentieth century, reopened the contemplative tradition in the West through his writings in the 1950s and 1960s. Despite being viewed as suspect by some church authorities, Merton courageously revealed that Western religion had largely lost its deeper wisdom tradition. Christianity lost its radical alternative consciousness by becoming overly rational, resulting in academic theology in Europe and narrow fundamentalism in America-both primarily left-brain approaches disconnected from human suffering, healing, justice, and inclusivity. Faith isn't blind assent to doctrines but an essential opening of heart and mind that enables spiritual transformation. It requires letting go of old patterns and moving through stages of unknowing to reach new levels of awareness. This explains why doubt and faith are correlative-people of great faith often experience profound doubt as they continue to grow.

Great love and great suffering are the two universal paths of transformation available to every human. These experiences break down ego defenses, crush dual thinking, and open us to Mystery. Suffering happens against our will, forcing us to surrender control. Suffering can either make us bitter or wise and compassionate. Both paths eventually open both the heart and mind spaces. Without these experiences, we remain locked in dualistic, judgmental thinking. True love is of one piece-how you love anything is how you love everything. We cannot sincerely love or forgive inside dualistic consciousness. There is a direct connection between love and suffering-if you love greatly, you will suffer, as you've given up control to another. This vulnerability is precisely what makes love transformative. When we truly love, we can no longer maintain the illusion of separateness that the ego desperately tries to preserve. Think of a time when you've loved deeply or suffered profoundly. Didn't that experience change how you see the world? Didn't it break open something in you that allowed for greater compassion and understanding? These aren't just emotional experiences but doorways to a different kind of consciousness-one that sees beyond the dualistic categories that normally define our thinking. This explains why Jesus placed such emphasis on love and willingly embraced suffering. These weren't arbitrary choices but recognition of the universal paths to transformation. When he commanded us to love our enemies, he wasn't giving an impossible moral demand but offering a prescription for breaking free from dualistic consciousness.

Awakening to Nondual Consciousness

Nondual thinking is not relativism, skepticism, fuzzy thinking, or simply acknowledging different perspectives. It's not an avoidance of judgment, Eastern philosophy, or postmodern nihilism. Rather, it's a sign of encountering the Absolute beyond words or ideas. Only an authentic God experience grounds one in nonduality because you've encountered Being Itself, which breaks all mental boundaries. For mystics, "words have become flesh," and experience transcends language. Paradoxes are easily accepted, and contradictions dissolve. Being awake isn't about happiness, productivity, or trying harder. It means dropping beneath the passing show to become a calm seer of your own dramas. You dis-identify from emotional noise, stop thinking about particulars, and collapse into pure consciousness. This feels unfamiliar at first because you've always thought your thinking was "you," but this broader sense soon feels like your deepest self. This is the True Self or soul, where you participate in Something Larger. This perspective allows you to see things as they truly are, without reference to your small self. You become paradoxically both utterly connected to others and absolutely free to be yourself. Your identity comes from within, allowing you to love others without using them. This is the "united witness" of your spirit with God's Spirit, the indwelling presence that teaches all things. John of the Cross understood how love works at the deepest level, seeing divine love as the template for human love and human love as preparation for transcendent encounter. In true love, you give part of yourself to another while seeing yourself in them, allowing them to do the same in return. What God sees and accepts in you becomes what you can see and accept in yourself, and ultimately how you see everything else. This is why allowing God and at least one other person to see us in our imperfection is crucial-it's the only way to experience transformative grace.
