While affluence is easily visible, influence remains somewhat mysterious despite being formally studied for over thirty years. Dr. Robert Cialdini, the "Father of Influence," identified six universal principles of persuasion that work regardless of age or geography: reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, authority, liking, and scarcity. The civic hacking example from Honolulu demonstrates this perfectly: when faced with a $9.3 million website redesign project, Code for America created a competition with a $9,300 prize that produced hundreds of citizen-focused designs in just weeks, saving taxpayers over $9.2 million.
Three disruptive "hacks" are reshaping our future: crowdfunding, 3D printing, and changing attitudes about intellectual property. These hacks bridge the gap between ideas and impact by circumventing traditional barriers in funding, manufacturing, and IP protection.
Funding represents the biggest barrier for new ideas, and Gen Z is revolutionizing capital-raising models. Small businesses, which create the majority of net new jobs and produce significantly more patents per employee than large firms, struggle to secure traditional funding.
