While few disagree with the ideal formulation of markets, many doubt their practical application. But even imperfect markets outperform command economies. As economist William Easterly notes, the invisible hand isn't utopia but a process that drives out incompetence in favor of excellence. History consistently shows that merchant-run societies, though imperfect, produce more prosperity, peace and culture than despotic ones - from Phoenicia versus Egypt to modern California versus Iran.

Ricardo and Malthus believed corn yields would stagnate as only marginal lands remained for cultivation. Even as living standards rocketed upward from the 1830s, Mill saw it as temporary.
Yet repeatedly, returns kept increasing through mechanization and cheap energy. Worker productivity continued rising, goods became cheaper with scale, and global population growth coincided with famine's near-disappearance. By the early twenty-first century, industrialization had spread prosperity globally, contradicting pessimistic predictions.

While intellectual property was originally meant to encourage sharing inventions, today most patents defend monopolies and deter rivals, actually discouraging innovation. Companies create "patent thickets" that new entrants must fight through. Patents also fail to address simultaneous discovery, which is the rule rather than exception.
Politicians mistakenly believe in a "linear model" where pure science drives applied science, which then creates useful technology. This model, dating back to Francis Bacon, gets innovation backwards. Examining history reveals scientific breakthroughs are typically the effect, not the cause, of technological change. Thermodynamics followed the steam engine rather than enabling it. Chemistry flourished to meet dye-makers' needs. The Industrial Revolution's textile mechanization came from practical tinkerers, not scientists.
