Jake, a white conservative Republican church deacon, posted an image of President Obama trampling the Bill of Rights. A Black woman from his church responded by calling out "racist bigots" who are church officers. Rather than responding defensively, Jake initiated a face-to-face conversation that became transformative. For the first time, he listened to how his posts appeared from her perspective, which led him to engage with other church members whose political views differed from his. While maintaining his conservative principles, Jake developed humility about his political views, recognizing that faithful Christians could hold different positions. This modern example illustrates an ancient problem: humanity was created to image God as beautiful community, but sin ruptured our communion. From Eden to our present polarization across ethnic, gender, socioeconomic, and political lines, fragmentation tells humanity's story. The Tower of Babel narrative (Genesis 11:1-9) reveals the roots of our ghettoization. Though humanity had one language, their unity was one of rebellion against God's command to fill the earth. Instead, they settled in Shinar to build a city and tower to "make a name for ourselves." Their technological achievement-attempting to build a ziggurat reaching heaven-was so puny that God had to "come down" to see it. In judgment and mercy, God confused their language, forcing them to disperse across the earth. This divine action created "ghettos" where we no longer trust each other, yet remain in solidarity against God through isolated communities. We now derive our dignity from these isolated communities-ethnic, social, cultural, economic, and academic ghettos-which we love to a fault. When confronted with cultural differences, we instinctively distrust and reject what we don't understand, blind to how thoroughly our understanding of being human is shaped by our particular ghetto. Racism exemplifies our ghettoization. In the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), of nearly 4,900 ministers, only about 50 are Black, 40 Hispanic, 480 Asian, and 2 First Nations-no non-white minority comprises even 10% of ministers. This isn't accidental but stems from theological and ecclesial practices that exclude people of color. Artist Doris Salcedo's work "Shibboleth" at the Tate Modern-a crack in the museum floor-symbolizes how we police boundaries as exclusionary tools.

Only Jesus can bear the weight of being at our center-our racial identities cannot. The Spirit doesn't remove diversity but enables us to love, understand and pursue one another within our diversity. Scripture's story is fundamentally about reunion-reversing the fractures and divisions caused by the fall.

All stand before God equally chosen, not because they're special, but because God set his love upon them. The compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and forgiveness Paul prescribes are specifically needed during discord and controversy. Love binds everything together in perfect harmony, enabling believers to ache for others as they do for themselves. Majority white denominations increasingly recognize their ethnic homogeneity as a hindrance to growth and sustainability. This unconscious preference contradicts our stated values: highly educated whites who claim comfort with Black neighbors often live more segregated lives than less-educated whites. Culture shapes our identity by differentiating groups and maintaining sameness, yet Psalm 96 calls all nations to worship God in beautiful attire. Beautiful community requires crafting a new "we"-not erasing ethnicity but embracing a new collective identity. Churches must probe their preferences because "minority fatigue" develops when ethnic minorities are the only ones adjusting. Two key actions can help: First, prayer-corporate heart examination is essential because we're often blind to how we maintain boundaries Christ destroyed. Second, get outside help-tools like the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) can reveal what churches can't see themselves. The IDI distinguishes between "objective culture" (visible artifacts) and "subjective culture" (underlying values and beliefs), measuring intercultural competence along a developmental continuum. Most people substantially overestimate their intercultural capability! Cultivating beautiful community isn't cheap-it costs preferences. For majority-culture churches, counting the cost means experiencing minority leadership, being cautious about tokenistic hiring, and ensuring minority leaders have real authority rather than symbolic positions. Bringing someone on as an intern gives them little influence while bearing a heavy burden as minority representative. Instead, hire for positions with decision-making authority and help them connect with people sharing their culture. Ethnic similarity emerged as crucial for belonging in diverse churches-minorities need representation either in congregation or leadership. Without similarity, differences become overwhelming. Minorities experience pressure of code switching and need spaces without that pressure. For minority-culture churches, the challenge stems from being safe havens for marginalized communities. Introducing diversity creates legitimate fear of losing identity, yet minority churches have valuable gifts to offer from their experience thriving despite marginalization. Beautiful community brings unavoidable dissonance, conflict and discomfort-it's not for the faint of heart.
