We often toggle between these extremes, finding no stable middle ground-accepting feedback means we're "bad," rejecting it means ignoring potentially valuable information. Simple labels can't capture the complexity of who we are. You might see yourself as "fair" or "trustworthy," but life presents situations that challenge these black-and-white self-definitions. A more nuanced self-story acknowledges both what you're proud of and where you fell short, allowing you to learn even from harsh criticism without being devastated by it. Accepting certain truths about ourselves creates a grounded foundation that makes feedback less destabilizing: you will make mistakes, you have complex intentions, and you have contributed to problems. To shift from fixed to growth assumptions, first become aware of your tendencies. Do you live in the Testing Room or the Learning Room? Do challenges threaten your identity or offer growth opportunities? Is failure the end or just another play in an ongoing game? Experiment with changing habits or improving skills, find a coach, and try things you aren't good at. When you fail, list ways to improve next time. After receiving negative feedback or rejection, give yourself a "second score" based on how you handle the first score. While the initial evaluation may not be fully in your control, your reaction to it usually is-and in the long term, this second score often matters more.
