Osamu Dazai (nascido Shūji Tsushima, 1909–1948), autor de Schoolgirl, foi um dos romancistas mais influentes e controversos do Japão no século XX. Publicado em 1939, Schoolgirl é uma obra precoce de ficção psicológica que demonstra a notável habilidade de Dazai em habitar diferentes perspectivas enquanto explora temas como alienação, identidade e o turbilhão emocional da adolescência.

Nascido em uma rica família de proprietários de terras no norte do Japão, Dazai estudou literatura francesa na Universidade de Tóquio e tornou-se renomado por seu estilo confessional de "romance-eu" — narrativas autobiográficas brutalmente honestas que capturavam a desilusão da sociedade japonesa moderna.
