Like a competent driver who navigates changing road conditions without fear, the intellectually mature person doesn't claim to "know all about" anything. Their security comes from within-from infinite flexibility of mind and an infinite-valued orientation. Some people seek "all the answers in one place" through philosophical works, political ideologies, or "great books." This represents both emotional immaturity (surrendering independent thought to verbal parent-symbols) and naivety about language (assuming a verbal map can "say all" about experience). The mature reader approaches great works differently-testing principles, questioning their applicability across contexts, seeking refinement rather than accepting dogma. Our "self-concepts"-the descriptions we make of ourselves-function as maps of our personal territory. These self-concepts determine our actions, dress, manners, and social choices more than our actual capabilities. Like all maps, self-concepts are incomplete representations that can become dangerously unrealistic. One technique for achieving realistic self-concepts is writing factual reports about ourselves without judgments, especially about facts that cause shame or embarrassment. While studying books often produces excessive intensional orientation, literature can serve as a guide to life with extensional benefits. Literature works through intensional means-manipulating informative and affective connotations of words-yet calls attention to previously unnoticed facts and arouses new feelings that expand our awareness. These new perspectives gradually disrupt our intensional orientations, removing our blindness. The extensionally oriented person is guided by facts that words point to, not just words themselves. Without language, our nervous systems would be extremely imperfect guides-we see things only in terms of our training and interests. Experience itself is an imperfect teacher without knowing what to look for. Language, both scientific and affective, gives meaning to experience-making the "trivial" significant and enriching human interactions. Literature and poetry fill experiences with rich significances, increasing the efficiency of our nervous systems and widening our perceptions.

Samuel Ichiyé Hayakawa foi um renomado semanticista e autor de Language in Thought and Action (A Linguagem no Pensamento e na Ação), uma exploração inovadora de como a linguagem molda o pensamento e o comportamento.
