People constantly expect 50 to solve their problems, especially those who claim they "held him down" in the past but can't explain what they actually did for him. These conversations always leave him depressed, questioning if he's being selfish by not helping everyone who asks. But he's learned that he can't afford to let someone else's lack of success undermine his own energy. Unlike most people who fear responsibility according to Freud, 50 embraces it completely. Taking full responsibility for your life is the only way to avoid the entitlement trap. True hustlers chase the gratification that comes from making their own vision reality, persisting through valleys until they finally reach the mountaintop. That view-earned through your own effort-is the sweetest one you'll ever experience. You must ask one essential question about everyone in your life: Do they make deposits into your life, or only withdrawals? Distance yourself immediately from those who only take. Like an ATM spitting out free money, people will keep taking until you shut them down. 50 is cutting off all the people who drain rather than fill him up, which is why he doesn't care if his absent father ever appears-he'd only make withdrawals. The older 50 gets, the less impressed he is by people who amass wealth and more inspired by those committed to giving it away. Bill Gates, David Geffen, and Warren Buffett will be remembered for their philanthropy, not just their business success. He wants his legacy to include more than selling records and making hit shows-he needs to invest his resources directly back into communities to help others make similar journeys to success.
