Successful collaborative decision-making requires proper preparation and guidance, including engaging the right people, bringing in a facilitator, fostering collaboration, and establishing ground rules. For high-impact decisions like creating product strategies, pivoting, or developing roadmaps, involve development team representatives, key stakeholders, and sponsors. Team representatives bring technical knowledge and can evangelize decisions to their teams. Key stakeholders provide expertise in areas like marketing and sales while securing their buy-in. Selecting a clear decision rule prevents confusion about who makes the final decision and how that decision is recognized. Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment-becoming aware of your feelings, thoughts, and moods. Our mental state influences how we perceive reality. When mindful, we can recognize tension or frustration before being overwhelmed by it, allowing us to respond more skillfully. Mindfulness isn't about suppressing thoughts or feelings, reaching blissful states, or becoming super productive. It's about paying attention to our inner world without necessarily approving of all thoughts and emotions, preventing us from acting out unskilful mental states or making poor decisions. Mindfulness provides specific leadership benefits for product people. Greater serenity helps you recognize tension early and remain calm in challenging situations, making you more trustworthy and pleasant to work with. Increased empathy strengthens your capacity to understand user needs and connect with stakeholders and team members. Better decision-making follows from this increased awareness and emotional regulation, helping you recognize cognitive biases and prevent emotions from driving product decisions. To be an effective leader, you must develop relevant skills and grow as an individual.
