My uncritical support began to waver during Obama's first term as I learned about his drone program, and Trayvon Martin's killing in 2013 became a turning point in my political awakening. When Black Lives Matter emerged following Trayvon's death, I initially felt skeptical but gradually embraced their message while growing increasingly enraged at Obama's unwillingness to acknowledge systematic racism and police violence. I came to recognize Obama as the epitome of neoliberal tokenism-a president who defended free-market capitalism, deregulated industries, bailed out Wall Street, and later collected $400,000 speaking fees from the same executives he had protected. Both major political parties had aligned with multinational corporations, with Democrats merely disguising their neoliberal policies as "progressive" while serving the same wealthy interests as Republicans. During the 2008 campaign, I befriended a Republican expat who later confessed she had voted for Obama twice-revealing how comfortable wealthy white Republicans felt with him, seeing in Obama what Wall Street saw: an ambitious minority willing to make rich white people comfortable. The U.S. government actively recruited Nazi scientists through Operation Paperclip spanning nine administrations, while FDR rejected Jewish refugees and imprisoned Japanese Americans. Earlier presidents like Andrew Jackson orchestrated ethnic cleansing of indigenous people, while Jefferson's white supremacist views shaped the nation's founding. Trump's crude racism resonates with millions because it aligns with America's foundational principles. The white supremacist in chief may be uniquely ugly, but "we have always lived in Trump country." Listening to NPR interviews with Trump supporters revealed the emotional connection many white Americans feel with him. One respiratory therapist wept with joy hearing Trump speak against political correctness, saying she'd waited decades for someone to "speak up for us." This visceral reaction illuminated how desperately many whites craved a politician who would abandon "elitist" political correctness for blunt strongman rhetoric. We can become aware of our racial stupidity, build coalitions, and create opportunities for connection. Becoming racially literate involves developing critical thinking, increasing awareness of how race permeates our lives, forming meaningful cross-racial relationships, and organizing for antiracist transformation. While education alone isn't enough to end racism, understanding systemic racism provides crucial insight into how our society shapes our thinking and behavior. Both Republicans and Democrats maintain systemic racism. As early as 1956, W.E.B. Du Bois rejected both major parties, denouncing their disenfranchisement of marginalized people and promotion of endless war. Martin Luther King Jr. echoed this assessment in his later years, condemning the United States as "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world" and linking militarism inextricably to the oppression of the poor. Fighting racism requires concern with oppression globally. We must connect the struggles of people of color and the poor in the United States with broader fights for freedom worldwide. This means opposing ethnic and religious bigotry throughout Asia, standing with Roma in Europe and African migrants, denouncing anti-Semitism while also condemning Israel's treatment of Palestinians, and opposing antiblack racism in Brazil, Latin America, and the Arab world. To build a less racist society, we must first relinquish magical thinking-there is no quick fix for racism. Even if we could somehow eradicate racial prejudice from every mind, the ongoing effects of past discrimination would continue reproducing racial wealth gaps and disparities. We must critically assess our racial socialization, examining when we first became aware of racial differences, what contact we had with people of different races, how we first experienced racism, and from whom we learned it. Start or join an antiracist study group and share what you learn about systemic racism. Commit to lifelong learning about racism. Empower young people to understand systemic racism, recognizing that children absorb society's prejudices incredibly early-studies reveal that even three-year-olds express preferences for white dolls. Recognize and reject false equivalencies like "reverse racism," which draw false parallels between majority and minority racial experiences. Disrupt racist practices and get comfortable calling things out. If you're not making powerful white people uncomfortable, you're doing antiracism wrong. Get organized and support the work of antiracist organizations, educators, and activists. Amplify the voices of Black women, Indigenous women, and women of color. Shift resources to marginalized people by redistributing access to education, healthcare, jobs, wealth, opportunities, citizenship, and respect. Finally, choose an area of impact that leverages your unique talents. You can't take on all the world's troubles, so it's important to focus your efforts where your skills can make the most difference. While complete eradication of human hierarchies might not be possible, change always is. We can admit ignorance, listen to those experiencing forms of oppression we'll never know, notice when we're tempted to look down on others, make better choices, call out injustice, identify allies, and mobilize for change. We can imagine a world without white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, and class oppression-even if we never live to see it-and commit ourselves to the unfinished work of overcoming.
