Her hitchhiking adventures were often dangerous. At seventeen, she hitchhiked to Olympia, Washington with a girl she barely knew. Their first ride was with a man who propositioned them for "love" before dropping them at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. Their next ride was with a trucker who tried to force sleeping arrangements that would put Amoruso in his bed. When they refused, he kicked them out on a mountain highway at 3 AM.
To support herself, she became a prolific shoplifter. She stole bestselling books from corporate stores, selling them online for quick cash. "I justified it by telling myself I was stealing from corporations, not people-but now I call bullshit on that logic," she admits. She stole anything: expensive wine, spirulina, even a rug taller than herself.
When she finally got caught at age twenty, trying to steal a cartful of items including a George Foreman grill and tampons, it was her wake-up call. She returned to the store, confessed, paid a fine, and avoided legal trouble. This rock-bottom moment made her realize she was killing her inner #GIRLBOSS. She packed up and moved back to San Francisco, determined to do something legitimate and brilliant.
After getting caught stealing, she stopped shoplifting cold turkey and began to reassess her anti-capitalist stance. "I was beginning to want nice things, and stealing wasn't the way to get them-I'd need a job," she explains. She'd equated comfort with ennui and possessions with materialism, but now understood that comfort creates psychic space for bigger things, and possessions can be emblems of hard work.
"The black and white world of my teens gave way to a gray area I now call home," she reflects. "I choose to follow explicit rules-like paying before leaving a store-but have fun breaking society's implied ones." This nuanced understanding of when to follow rules and when to break them would become central to her business philosophy.

Amoruso never aimed to be rich and was shocked when venture capitalists suddenly valued Nasty Gal in the millions. "Our success came because I cared about the process as much as results-no detail too small," she explains. Though her political ideals once made her view money with distaste, she's realized money equals freedom. "Good finances prevent you from getting stuck in situations you hate."
Her own financial education came through hard lessons. At nineteen, she unknowingly ruined her credit by signing up for what she thought was a Victoria's Secret rewards program but was actually a credit card. Because she moved frequently, the $28 bill never reached her until her credit was wrecked. "When people write about how I built Nasty Gal without debt, they miss that it wasn't by choice-no one would give me credit," she reveals. This forced her to make the business profitable from day one, growing to $28 million without borrowing.
Her father's mantra after her family's bankruptcy became "Cash is king"-simple yet profound: don't spend more than you have. In the suburbs, she saw people flaunting possessions that weren't signs of what they could afford but what they could borrow. When her parents cut her off financially, she was envious of supported friends, but now recognizes that forcing her to provide for herself was one of their best parenting decisions.
By 2010, she had almost $1 million cash in the bank, taking screenshots of her account balance during holiday sales spikes, wanting to remember what that many zeros looked like forever.
Amoruso is shameless about discussing money-a quality that served her well in business. From haggling at thrift stores to negotiating with investors, she's not afraid to ask for what she wants. "You don't get what you don't ask for," she states bluntly. When asking for a raise, she advises being unemotional and honest about whether you deserve it. "Skip personal sob stories-your car breaking down isn't your boss's problem."
While no longer a scrooge, she still invests wisely. "Spend money as an investment in your well-being, not because you're bored," she advises. "Don't go 'Versace-Versace-Versace' just because you can." She cautions against living like a CEO when you're still a sandwich artist. Her first car after her old Volvo wasn't a Porsche-it was a used Nissan Murano. "I put half down, financed the rest at 11% interest (my first loan!), and was so excited I hugged the car salesman," she recalls. Later when she could afford a Porsche, she discovered her credit was still only mediocre despite running a successful company. So she paid cash-no financing, no lease. "This time," she notes, "nobody got a hug."

Amoruso hates when people attribute her success to "luck." Luck, she argues, implies a lack of responsibility-that success is given to an undeserving few rather than earned through effort. "Luck tells us we don't control our fate. I don't buy luck, but I do buy magic," she explains. Not just the kind found at the Magic Castle (a private magician's club in Hollywood where she spends Saturday nights), but the everyday magic we create ourselves.
This isn't really magic at all-it's recognizing that we control our thoughts and our thoughts control our lives. "Like attracts like. You get back what you put out," she says. Despite Nasty Gal's wild success feeling terrifying at times, every small choice she made-getting up each morning, perfecting product descriptions-contributed to where she is now. "Magical thinking is the alchemy that projects you into the professional and personal life you want, but only when paired with action. Fortune favors those who get shit done."
She describes chaos magic as the practical idea that beliefs serve as active forces in the world. "We choose what and how we believe, and these beliefs become tools to make things happen," she explains. "It's like the red string of my imaginary kite-if you believe something, others will too." You can't convince someone else you're amazing if you don't actually think you are. This isn't the shallow confidence from Instagram likes, but unshakeable self-belief that persists even when things aren't great.
In chaos magic practice, sigils are abstract symbols embedded with wishes. Amoruso uses her internet passwords as modern sigils, embedding them with wishes or financial goals, subtly reminding herself of what she's working for dozens of times daily.
Though she believes in magic, Amoruso isn't "hippy-dippy." "If you approach everything with intention, you can affect outcomes or at least how you feel about them," she explains. "You can lose positive things by focusing on the negative-a huge waste of time." When you think about people, you give them power. She learned this lesson the hard way at a Halloween party when she kept bringing up a woman her boyfriend had once hooked up with-only to have the woman appear and start a physical fight. "I'd put so much energy into thinking about what I didn't want that I'd manifested exactly that. I conjured that bitch!" she exclaims.
She learned the same lesson with business competitors-obsessing over them won't help you succeed. "Focus on positive things and more positive things happen. But remember, it's not luck-it's magic you made yourself."

Embracing Your Inner Freak
As Jean-Paul Sartre put it, "Hell is other people." Though Amoruso no longer agrees completely, she understands the sentiment. At her fifth birthday party, she was blindfolded and spun around to hit a pinata, not realizing there was candy inside. When it broke open and other kids dove for the treats, she was so overwhelmed she hid under a table until everyone left. "Twenty-five years later, I'm still not a fan of surprises," she admits.
Amoruso describes herself as a metalhead who finds comfort in downer music. Saint Vitus's "Born Too Late" perfectly captures her feeling of being an outsider with lyrics about being mocked for long hair and outdated clothes. Like her friend who feels he "got off at the wrong stop" in space and time, she believes not everyone fits their assigned era. "Until time travel exists, we must make the most of where we land," she says.
She's never been attached to finding anything that was 100% "her"-she constantly evolved through different lifestyles. This mindset helped with Nasty Gal, which she's always viewed as a work in progress. "When something didn't work, like a dress not getting bids, I'd try new approaches-rewriting descriptions or changing thumbnails," she explains. As a #GIRLBOSS, she advises diving into things without attachment to results. "When your goal is experience and knowledge, failure becomes impossible because failure is your invention."
Being an outsider gave Amoruso freedom to do and say what she wanted. In seven years, she went from jobless nobody to role model under constant scrutiny. "It's strange knowing my words matter and having to address 200 employees while seeming composed and knowledgeable," she confesses. "I felt like a fraud for years, wondering who gave this freak the keys."
She kept business contacts at arm's length, believing her "real friends" were San Francisco weirdos who loved obscure elf metal. Eventually she realized this was bullshit-"I belonged anywhere I wanted to be, whether boardrooms or business class." Nasty Gal became her MBA, teaching her to ask questions when she didn't understand, regardless of eye-rolling. "When you run a company, you can't afford to pretend," she states. "The earlier you stop worrying about what others think, the easier life becomes."
Nasty Gal exists half in fashion and half in its own galaxy. Amoruso hates Fashion Week-"it's uncomfortable bench seating in warehouses, fighting for your assigned spot while wearing ridiculous shoes." As someone who's neither blogger nor editor, she feels like Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls at fashion parties, reverting to insecure thirteen-year-old worries about wearing the right shoes.
"Nasty Gal is antifashion because we let girls choose what fashion means to them," she explains. "The world doesn't need another boring brand, so embrace what makes you different. Alter your clothes all you want, but never alter your inner freak."

The Art of Hiring, Firing, and Everything in Between
Amoruso has been on all sides of employment-hired and fired multiple times, and now responsible for hiring and firing others. Her first rule of hiring: "Playing hard to get doesn't work with employers. They don't have time to court you-you need to romance them." In a tight job market, you must sweep them off their feet or remain unemployed. Ideally, apply for jobs you genuinely find exciting. If not, "fake it till you make it."
She loves cover letters despite their being painful to write and often read. "They're your first chance to impress your future boss," she explains. "When reviewing hundreds of similar applications, cover letters provide the only glimpse of personality." Common mistakes include making the letter all about what you want, failing to connect your experience to the job, offering unsolicited criticism of the company, and careless writing with spelling errors.
For resumes, she advises making yours stand out with creative design rather than templates. "Use clear language that explains exactly what you did rather than vague corporate speak," she suggests. "Instead of 'Built brand relationships within the creative community,' say 'Curated artwork, booked bands, secured beverage sponsors, and oversaw budget for monthly art exhibits.'"
Even with a killer cover letter, interviews are intense. Be prepared for both smart and seemingly dumb questions. When asked about your biggest weakness, be honest-don't disguise strengths as weaknesses. Research the company thoroughly and know what you can bring to the table.
After countless interviews, Amoruso can "smell crazy from a mile away." Red flags include oversharing about previous employers, being too informal, or claiming to be a "consultant" without concrete accomplishments. "Even if your previous boss was terrible, complaining makes you look entitled and indiscreet," she warns.
Once you land a job, Amoruso has clear advice for keeping it: "The four words I hate most? 'That's not my job.'" At Nasty Gal, everyone's ultimate job is making the company succeed. When their warehouse manager quit two weeks before Black Friday, their entire team-creative director, merchandisers, buyers, and Amoruso herself-worked in the dusty warehouse until 4 A.M. counting inventory.
"A #GIRLBOSS who's willing to work below and above her position stands out," she explains. "Sometimes stepping in when your boss is swamped shows your worth. Figure it out as you go and make it look effortless-that attitude gets you ahead."
Be a nice person at work. "Your talent means nothing if you're terrible to work with," she states bluntly. The worst offenders are selectively mean-nice to superiors but rude to peers or subordinates. "If you mistreat the front desk staff, security guards, or even the Starbucks baristas downstairs, that news will eventually reach leadership."
Another important boundary: "Your boss is not your friend, and if you're the boss, your employees aren't your friends." Amoruso learned this painfully when dining with a former direct report who took her vulnerability about feeling like a "cheese ball" in her new Porsche as an opportunity to insult her, claiming others thought they were "working to pay for my Porsche."
Finally, she cautions against entitlement: "Getting a job is great, but you need to prove yourself before asking for a raise or promotion. Four months aren't enough-minimum one year, and only if you've been exceptional." Many in her generation don't understand you have to work your way up. "Entry-level means entry-level-you won't be running creative projects immediately," she explains. "Your parents may have told you you're special, but you still must work harder than everyone else."

Building a Business Without a Business Plan
"I never started a business. I started an eBay store, and ended up with a business," Amoruso explains. At twenty-two, she was just looking for a way to pay rent and buy her Starbucks chai. Had someone shown her Nasty Gal's future, she would've gasped thinking that's way too much work.
Starting small allowed her to tweak and grow, tweak and grow-what she calls the "incremental potential." Nasty Gal succeeded because she listened to customers rather than dictating what they should buy. "Starting a business is risky and requires personal sacrifice-expect to be broke for a long time," she warns.
Without anyone to turn to for business advice, she Googled everything, watched YouTube videos of experts, and studied similar businesses on LinkedIn. Now she can hire experts, but she's still calling the shots, even if people mistakenly address the "adult" in the room.
While she thinks everyone should tap into their entrepreneurial spirit, she acknowledges not everyone should be an entrepreneur. Harvard professor Howard Stevenson defined entrepreneurship as "the pursuit of opportunity without regard to resources currently controlled"-a definition she embraces. The old paradigm of following rules to get promoted is changing. As Seth Godin points out in Linchpin, "people who reject the worst of the current system are actually more likely to succeed."
Amoruso's first meeting with venture capitalists was intimidating-she'd never been in a boardroom and they spoke completely different languages. For about a year after that, she ignored anyone reaching out about investing in Nasty Gal. Unlike most entrepreneurs, she arrived without a PowerPoint presentation-Nasty Gal's strongest selling point wasn't what they planned to do, but what they'd already accomplished.
The only investor she liked was Danny Rimer from Index Ventures. Unlike others who had just "discovered" women liked buying things online, Danny had already invested in great fashion companies like ASOS and Net-a-Porter. "He truly understood Nasty Gal rather than just seeing us as the hot ticket," she explains. They settled on a modest $9 million investment with plans to revisit in six months.
"What I learned is that investors want businesses that don't need money, and your execution must be stronger than your idea," she reflects. "Desperation is never attractive to investors."

Finding Creativity in Everything
At age three, Amoruso pretended to be a speaker, standing in the corner with her mouth open as if music was coming from her. At four, she was a "camera," taking mental pictures by blinking. Her creativity crystallized in her teens when she got her first camera, and at eighteen, after being hit by a car while biking, she used the settlement money to travel to Portugal and Spain, returning with a passion for photography.
After her European travels, she enrolled in photography classes at City College of San Francisco. For her final project, she photographed a tiny Russian Orthodox Church near her apartment-an architectural loner she felt kinship with. Mother Maria, the resident nun, allowed her into this world despite her "worldly" background. She later invited Amoruso to photograph the funeral of their priest, who had lived in true rejection of modern society.
Though she ultimately couldn't afford the $50,000 tuition for art school, completing this photography series taught her something valuable: "When I do things because I want to rather than because I have to, I can accomplish a lot."
Applying to San Francisco Art Institute taught her to be free within a set of rules in a way school and jobs hadn't. For her business, eBay provided the structure she needed. "I couldn't have built my own website then, but eBay offered simple, achievable tasks (take photo, upload, write description) that accumulated into a business," she explains. "That immediate gratification kept me going, whereas beginning with a business plan might have stalled me."
Amoruso believes anything can be creative if approached with intention. "Making a smoothie can be creative if you strive to make it the best ever, or boring if you mindlessly throw ingredients together," she explains. At Subway, she enjoyed the satisfying spray of the dishwashing nozzle, arranging dough in perfect patterns, and discovering the secret to perfect cookies by slamming hot trays on the counter.
Business is as creative as art. At Nasty Gal, she's both CEO and creative director-roles rarely found on the same business card. "I'm equally creative choosing investors as reviewing collection samples, and have as much fun hiring people as I did with a camera," she says. Her creative process is intuitive yet methodical. For photo editing, she blurs her eyes at thumbnails to identify which images pop without getting distracted by details.

"An advantage of being naive is believing in yourself when no one else will," Amoruso concludes. "Bad bitches are taking over the world. There's a chance for you, #GIRLBOSS. So take it."
