After 30 years in advertising, particularly direct response advertising, I've discovered that economists' rational models of human behavior are wholly inadequate. While economics celebrates theories like Ricardo's Comparative Advantage, advertising's most important finding might be that "advertisements featuring cute animals tend to be more successful." One client's prize draw for "free energy worth 1,000" received 67,000 entries, while a subsequent draw for a 15 penguin nightlight received 360,000. I distinguish between "nonsense" and "non-sense"-the latter being behavior that appears irrational but serves deeper evolutionary purposes. The official reason we clean our teeth is dental health, but our actual behavior contradicts this explanation. If dental health were our primary concern, we'd brush after every meal. Instead, we're most likely to brush before social encounters where bad breath might embarrass us-before dates or presentations, not after eating sweets at home.
Why is toothpaste mint-flavored? Why did stripy toothpaste fascinate consumers despite having no practical benefit once in the mouth? The stripes served as psychological signals suggesting multiple functions. This visible differentiation makes product claims more believable to consumers.
For half a million years before bacteriology emerged in the 1870s, evolution provided emotional solutions to rational problems. We inherited aversions that helped our ancestors survive, regardless of whether they understood why. As Nassim Taleb notes, "There is no such thing as a rational or irrational belief-there is only rational or irrational behavior."
Evolution attaches emotions to behaviors because instincts are heritable while reasons must be taught. Sometimes these emotions seem irrational-like British fear of harmless spiders-but they persist because they pose little disadvantage. History abounds with examples of beneficial practices driven by spiritual rather than scientific reasoning. Religious dietary laws like kosher and halal restrictions have practical benefits: chickens require less water than pigs, produce eggs, can be consumed quickly without preservation issues, and are transportable for nomads.

When Lieutenant Gilbert S. Daniels was hired to design better aircraft cockpits in the 1950s, he challenged the fundamental assumption of designing for "the average man." Metrics are beloved by businesses because they make comparison and management easier. But what gets mismeasured inevitably gets mismanaged. The fundamental problem with metrics is they destroy diversity by forcing everyone to pursue the same narrow goals in the same narrow ways.
Take academic performance as a recruitment filter. I've never seen evidence that academic success predicts workplace success, yet British firms routinely interview only candidates with upper second-class degrees or better. This practice isn't based on evidence-it just seems logical. When everyone adopts this approach, we either waste thousands of university educations or create meaningless grade inflation.
The context and order of choices affect our decisions in ways we wouldn't consciously expect. Dan Ariely highlighted the famous "decoy effect" in decision-making-where consumers change preferences between two options when presented with a third option that's more desirable than one but less desirable than the other.
The classic example is the Economist's subscription offer: online-only for $59, print-only for $125, or print-and-online for $125. The middle option is a decoy-no one would choose it when they could get both print and online for the same price. Yet it dramatically affects behavior. With the decoy, 84% chose the premium subscription; without it, only 32% did.

Though psychologically and financially challenging, this approach recognizes that breakthroughs typically come from luck, experimentation and instinct rather than methodical processes.
As Richard Feynman explained in 1964: "First, we guess... Then we compute the consequences... then we compare the computation results to experience." A good guess that stands up to observation is still science. So is a lucky accident. Yet business and politics remain obsessed with rational quantification, valuing methodological purity over potential solutions.
Imagine climbing an uncharted mountain. From below, you can't see which routes work, so you proceed through trial and error-trying paths, backtracking, following instincts, and sometimes just getting lucky. Once you reach the summit, the optimal route becomes obvious. When describing your climb to others, you'll likely pretend you took this ideal path all along, attributing to good judgment what was largely experimentation and fortune.
This selective editing happens everywhere. TV detectives never show the wasted hours pursuing dead ends. We constantly rewrite our past to create narratives of conscious intent rather than luck and random experimentation. My friend once claimed he bought his house partly because it was near an excellent restaurant-forgetting the restaurant opened after he moved in.

Wine tastes better from heavier bottles, painkillers work better when believed expensive, and everything becomes more desirable when scarce. Yet public institutions resist magical solutions, confining themselves to legal compulsion and economic incentives while ignoring more cost-effective alternatives.
The alchemists' fundamental error was assuming value lies in what something is rather than how it's perceived. You don't need to change atomic structure to make lead as valuable as gold-you need to change human psychology so it feels equally valuable.
Paper money proves this point perfectly: its value is purely psychological. Nearly all successful businesses-Google, Dyson, Uber, Red Bull, Apple, Starbucks-have stumbled upon psychological magic tricks, while countless failed companies had perfectly logical business ideas without any alchemy.
Semantic alchemy transforms value through language alone. The $20 "Chilean sea bass" gracing high-end restaurant plates is actually Patagonian toothfish, rebranded by American fish wholesaler Lee Lentz (though it's neither Chilean nor bass).
This tradition of seafood rebranding includes monkfish (formerly goosefish), orange roughy (slimehead), and sea urchins (once "whore's eggs"). When refrigeration killed demand for salted pilchards, Nick Howell of the Pilchard Works in Cornwall rebranded them as "Cornish sardines," successfully petitioning the EU for Protected Designation of Origin status. The Daily Telegraph reported that Tesco's fresh sardine sales rocketed 180% in a single year, revitalizing Cornwall's fishing industry.

While some argue GPS has made this obsolete, the Knowledge serves a deeper purpose as a signal of commitment.
In markets where you rarely interact with the same person twice, trust requires proof of commitment. By demanding serious investment before entering the trade, the system ensures only committed individuals become cabbies. The high barrier to entry means drivers have too much to lose by cheating passengers.
Many seemingly illogical things make perfect sense when viewed through their meaning rather than their function. An engagement ring serves no practical purpose, but its expense signals a man's belief and intention that his marriage will last.
Trust isn't just maintained by the prospect of repeat business-businesses can actively signal trustworthiness by demonstrating their reliance on repeat custom. This "continuity probability signalling" explains seemingly irrational behaviors across nature and commerce: carnivorous fish not eating their cleaner fish, fancy shopping bags, complimentary extras at restaurants, and lavish bank buildings.
For signaling to be effective, it must be costly. When promoting Microsoft Windows NT server software, we created elaborate, expensive packaging rather than sending simple letters. This conveyed not just information but significance-that this was an important launch with limited availability.
As my colleague Steve Barton wisely noted, if we couldn't create standout creative work, we should at least send a simple letter via FedEx-because the $10 delivery cost would ensure recipients paid attention in a way a 50-cent stamp never could. The campaign succeeded with over 10% of recipients trying the product.

When Australian regulators prosecuted Reckitt Benckiser for selling identical ibuprofen formulations as specialized pain relievers at premium prices, they missed the psychological dimension. Research shows branded analgesics are more effective than generic ones, and drugs marketed for specific conditions work better for those conditions-even with identical ingredients.
Psychologist Nicholas Humphrey suggests placebos work by signaling to our bodies that conditions are favorable for healing, prompting greater investment in recovery. Our immune systems, calibrated for harsher ancestral environments, need convincing that resources can be safely allocated to healing. The care of doctors, exotic medications, and attentive loved ones create this illusion of safety and abundance.

In ancestral conditions, squandering resources on an immune response could mean starvation or death, so our bodies developed a conservative approach to healing.
To recalibrate this response for modern abundance requires what Sutherland calls "benign bullshit"-the kind his grandfather deployed before antibiotics: cheering patients up, prescribing bed rest, good food, medicinal whisky, and ineffectual but confidence-inspiring pills that triggered the body's "healing mode."

Joel Raphaelson's 50-year-old theory explains that "People don't choose Brand A over Brand B because they think Brand A is better, but because they're more certain it's good." This unconscious process explains brand premiums-while a brand name rarely guarantees the best product, it reliably indicates the product isn't terrible. Someone with significant reputational investment has more to lose from selling duds.
When choosing between a Samsung TV and an unknown brand like "Wangwei" that's 200 cheaper, we're not just paying for performance but for certainty. Samsung has too much to lose from selling defective products, while Wangwei has little reputational capital at stake. This satisficing approach evolved because we make decisions under uncertainty, where mathematical certainty is impossible. For decisions like whom to marry or what car to buy, there are too many unknowns and immeasurable variables.
Our decision-making considers both expected outcomes and worst-case scenarios. On eBay, sellers with approval ratings below 97% can barely sell goods for half the price of 100%-rated sellers-we won't accept even small risks at any discount. Similarly, McDonald's global success stems not from culinary excellence but consistent reliability with minimal variance.

Psychophysics explores how perception varies among species and how our sensory experience differs from objective reality. Our perception of time is elastic-an hour feels different depending on our circumstances. In many industries, understanding psychophysics proves more valuable than physics alone. Purple is an even greater deception-it doesn't exist on the light spectrum at all but is constructed in our brains when red and blue sensors are triggered without green.

When a Belgian biscuit manufacturer replaced their popular brand with a lower-fat variant, sales plummeted despite blind taste tests showing people couldn't detect differences. The problem was labeling the package with "Now with lower fat"-health indicators on packaging make contents taste worse to consumers, regardless of the actual flavor in blind tastings.
We dramatically overestimate the importance of whatever captures our attention. As Kahneman explains, "Nothing is as important as we think it is while we are thinking about it." Marketers exploit this by creating comparison tables that highlight only the unique benefits their product offers, ignoring the numerous features all competitors share. This amplifies the sense of loss consumers might feel when considering alternatives.

The Wason card test demonstrates how reframing problems dramatically changes our ability to solve them. When presented as abstract logic (cards showing numbers and colors to test a rule about even numbers and blue faces), fewer than one in ten people get it right. Yet when the identical logical problem is reframed as checking drinking age compliance, nearly everyone solves it correctly. An alchemist's job is finding which framing works best-like convincing an 82-year-old father to pay for TV by reframing 17 monthly as just 50p daily, making the same cost suddenly seem reasonable compared to his 2 daily newspaper habit.
People inherently value having choices, even when economically irrational. British Telecom's experiment with 50,000 letters per group revealed that offering both phone and mail response options yielded a 7.8% response rate, nearly matching the combined total of groups offered only phone (2.9%) or only mail (5%) options. This explains why public services and monopolies are often underappreciated-people naturally prefer things they've actively chosen.
Small changes can yield enormous results. The "$300m button" case study shows how replacing a "Register" button with "Continue" and adding reassuring text ("You do not need to create an account to make purchases") increased purchases by 45%, generating $300 million in additional revenue the first year. Taking too narrow a view of human motivation leads us to dismiss seemingly pointless elements that actually make systems work, like petals on a flower.
Consumer markets reveal our unconscious motivations in ways theories can't, making capitalism "the Galapagos Islands for understanding human motivation." Like dog breeders who understood natural selection before Darwin, salespeople grasp the difference between what people say and what they do. Psychologist Amos Tversky acknowledged his work simply examined scientifically what car salesmen and advertisers already knew instinctively.
This insight offers hope for resolving political disagreements by acknowledging the gap between unconscious motivations and post-rationalizations. Universal Basic Income illustrates this potential, as it appeals across political divides by "scenting the soap"-preserving incentives and fairness while providing welfare.
