The right question should be ambitious yet actionable-hard enough to be interesting but realistic enough that you might answer it. Beautiful questions often appear in unexpected places-through accidents like Van Phillips experienced, from a child's inquiry as with Edwin Land, or from mundane problems. They might be found in your community or workplace, or by experiencing different environments, as when Gary White visited Guatemala and asked "Why do so many lack this basic thing the rest of us take for granted?" When you find your beautiful question, stay with it despite frustration. Break it into smaller questions, cycling through Whys, What Ifs, and Hows. Create space for inspiration, which comes in unpredictable waves. Don't fear discovering how much you don't know-as Stuart Firestein suggests, what if we cultivated ignorance instead of fearing it?
