Nascido: September 13, 1965 – Concord, New Hampshire, United States
Annie Duke is an author and decision strategist focused on decision-making under uncertainty, cognitive bias, quitting, and probabilistic thinking. Her notable books include Thinking in Bets, How to Decide, and Quit. A former professional poker player, she won a World Series of Poker bracelet and earned more than $4 million in tournament winnings.
Annie Duke’s career is unusual not because it changed direction once, but because each turn built on the same underlying question: how people make decisions when certainty is impossible. Before she became widely known as a poker champion, she studied English and psychology at Columbia University, then earned a National Science Foundation fellowship to pursue graduate work in cognitive psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Near the end of graduate school, a serious stomach illness caused her to miss a cycle of faculty job talks. Poker, initially suggested by her brother as a temporary way to earn money, became the unexpected alternative. What was meant to be a stopgap evolved into an 18-year professional career in which she won more than $4 million in tournaments, captured a World Series of Poker bracelet, and became the only woman to win both the WSOP Tournament of Champions and the NBC National Heads-Up Championship. She retired from poker in 2012 and later completed her PhD at Penn in 2023. ((https://www.annieduke.com/about/))
