Explore the XM25 Punisher, a radical airburst system designed to eliminate the concept of cover and revolutionize small arms technology for the modern infantryman.

The XM25 was specifically designed to kill the very concept of cover, making the enemy’s hiding spots irrelevant by using a microchip inside the grenade to count its rotations and detonate in mid-air right over the target.
A comprehensive lesson on the XM25 Airburst Launcher (Punisher), covering its combat technology and operation, its development history and technical setbacks, and its broader impact on modern infantry tactics.

The XM25 Punisher, formally known as the Individual Semi-Automatic Airburst System, is a radical weapon designed to engage targets in defilade. Unlike traditional small arms, it fires grenades that are programmed to explode in mid-air above an enemy. This airburst technology allows the weapon to shower fragments onto targets hiding behind thick cover, such as concrete walls, effectively making traditional hiding spots irrelevant on the battlefield.
For decades, infantrymen relied on physical barriers like two-foot-thick concrete walls as a safety net against small arms fire. The XM25 was specifically engineered as a Counter Defilade Target Engagement (CDTE) system to bypass these defenses. By flying over obstacles and detonating from above, it eliminates the protection provided by cover, representing a fundamental shift in military history and infantry weapon tactics.
The introduction of the XM25 is considered the first truly fundamental shift in small arms technology since the dawn of the assault rifle in 1943. While the German StG 44 changed warfare by providing the power of a machine gun to individual soldiers, the XM25 changes the paradigm further. It moves beyond simply increasing the volume of fire to neutralizing the enemy's primary defense: the ability to take cover.
