Explore the history of anti-tank warfare and the evolution of armor. Learn how the Mark I tank changed the Western Front in 1916 and sparked a century-long arms race.

The evolution of anti-tank warfare is essentially a frantic, century-long leapfrog game between armor and penetration, moving from the brute force of WWI to the smart lethality of the modern era.
Evolution of personal anti-tank weapons from WWI to modern 2026 warfare, focusing on the arms race against armor developments. Include a mix of high-level concepts and detailed physics/penetration data.

The introduction of the Mark I tank on September 15, 1916, caused a psychological collapse among German soldiers in the trenches. These metal monsters were designed to negate the German trench system and allow the Allies to return to maneuver warfare. While the troops on the ground were shocked, the German General Staff was less surprised by the new technology.
In the early days of anti-tank warfare, tank armor was remarkably thin, measuring only about 6 to 12 millimeters thick. While this half-inch of plating could protect the crew from small arms fire and shell fragments, it was vulnerable to heavier weapons. A direct hit from a light field gun or mortar could easily penetrate the armor and incinerate the crew.
The French were critical of the British for fielding the Mark I tanks too early and in such small numbers. They believed that by revealing the technology before having a massive, reliable fleet, the Allies lost the element of surprise. This early deployment gave the German military a crucial opportunity to begin developing countermeasures and armor penetration tactics.
