Explore the history of mirrors and how ancient humans first discovered their reflections in nature, from still puddles to the evolution of modern glass.

A mirror doesn't actually flip things left-to-right; it flips things front-to-back. This front-to-back flip is what makes it look like left and right have swapped places.
The history and invention of mirrors explained for a five-year-old (Amy) and a seven-year-old (Abigail), covering how people first saw reflections and how modern mirrors were developed.

The very first mirrors were not objects people could hang on a wall; they were found in nature. Long before humans could manufacture glass, they relied on still surfaces like puddles, quiet ponds, or slow-moving rivers to see their reflections. This natural magic allowed early humans to catch a glimpse of the sky, the trees, and themselves for the first time in history.
While natural mirrors like ponds provided a reflection, they were highly unreliable and inconvenient. A simple breeze or a bird dipping its toe into the water would cause the image to wiggle and disappear into ripples. Additionally, these natural reflections were stationary, meaning ancient people could not take a pond or a puddle with them into their homes to check their appearance.
Before the evolution of modern mirrors, people lived in a world where they might go their entire lives without knowing exactly what they looked like. To see a reflection, they had to find a perfectly still body of water. Without these natural mirrors, it was impossible to perform simple tasks we take for granted today, such as checking for messy hair or seeing one's own smile.
