We are part of a massive, continuous narrative, where our existence depends on a series of fortunate catastrophes. From the first atoms forming to the complexity of the global economy, none of the structures we live in are permanent—they are all patterns of change.
World history

The Deep History of Us explores the massive, continuous narrative of our existence, starting from the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago. The show moves beyond traditional history to examine the geological and biological foundations of our world, covering the transition from energy and matter to the development of the Earth's crust and the eventual rise of human evolution.
During the Hadean Eon, which lasted nearly a billion years, the Earth transformed from a cloud of dust into a solid crust with oceans. Described as a literal hellscape of volcanoes and steam, this period set the stage for biological evolution. It was within this prehistoric soup that the first single-celled ancestors, known as prokaryotes, appeared roughly 4 billion years ago.
The O2 catastrophe occurred approximately 2.5 billion years ago when oxygen began to build up in the atmosphere. This event represented a major shift in the deep history of our planet, moving away from the slow burn of early geological formation. By changing the chemical makeup of the Earth, the O2 catastrophe paved the way for more complex life forms to develop after eons of single-celled dominance.
