Instead, a person using an internal scorecard judges themselves based on the four cardinal virtues: Wisdom, Courage, Justice, and Temperance. By competing only with the version of yourself from yesterday rather than someone else's highlight reel, you develop "secure self-esteem" that cannot be taken away by outside circumstances.

    Voluntary discomfort, such as taking cold showers or fasting, is a form of "stress inoculation training" designed to build calluses on the soul. Because modern life is filled with constant comfort, our tolerance for stress has weakened. By choosing to do hard things on purpose, you prove to yourself that you can handle being cold, hungry, or tired.
