Explore Self-Determination Theory (SDT) for coaches. Learn how Edward Deci and Richard Ryan’s framework helps ignite internal drive and intrinsic motivation.

Instead of wondering how to push your client, you start looking at how to create an environment where their natural, internal drive can actually breathe.
Self-determination theory and how to apply it as a coach.

Self-Determination Theory, or SDT, is a psychological framework developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan in 1985. It suggests that humans possess an innate desire to grow and integrate their experiences rather than being passive sponges moved by rewards or punishments. For coaches, SDT provides a manual for understanding the quality of a client's motivation, shifting the focus from external 'carrots and sticks' to fostering a person's natural internal spark and drive.
Self-Determination Theory was developed by researchers Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. The core premise of the theory is that human nature is naturally wired for growth and improvement rather than being inherently lazy. It argues that people have an internal drive to be in the 'driver's seat' of their own lives. Instead of focusing on how much motivation someone has, SDT looks at the quality of that motivation and how it can be nurtured.
Coaches can use SDT to move away from traditional 'push' tactics and instead create an environment where a client's intrinsic drive can breathe. By understanding that motivation is not just about incentives, coaches can help clients find their internal spark. This approach views human nature optimistically, focusing on creating the right conditions for a client's natural desire to grow and succeed to emerge organically during the coaching process.
