Explore strategies for overcoming the B1 plateau and mastering a polyglot stack of French, Spanish, and BSL through metalinguistic awareness and daily routines.

The shift from B1 to B2 isn't about collecting more words; it’s about moving from decoding the language to using it instinctively through activation speed and depth.
Today i want to learn how to accelerate my language learning. I'd say I'm upper beginner or lower intermediate in french and beginner in Spanish. i'm currently averaging about 45 mins every other day in each language, alternating french and Spanish each day. i learn via fluentU/netflix, shadowing, the superfluent app + verb drills. I'm also learning BSL + have been for about 5 years on and off so am now confident talking about most topics + want to continue improving (level 3 exams in 3 weeks).

The B1 plateau is described as a comfortable trap where learners can understand media like Netflix and survive daily interactions but stop seeing significant progress. At this stage, especially in French, moving to a B2 level requires shifting focus from collecting vocabulary to increasing activation speed and depth. Many learners mistake this comfort for growth, when they are actually idling in their current routine.
Research suggests that reaching an intermediate level typically requires approximately 275 hours of dedicated study. For a learner practicing 45 minutes every day, this equates to roughly one year of consistent effort. However, alternating languages every other day can double the calendar time needed to see major leaps in progression, as it reduces the daily immersion required for rapid growth.
Yes, learning multiple languages simultaneously, such as French, Spanish, and BSL, can be beneficial by building metalinguistic awareness. This concept suggests that polyglots develop a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanics of how languages work. While it may feel like spinning several plates, this awareness can actually accelerate progress by helping the learner understand the 'why' behind different linguistic structures.
Managing BSL Level 3 exams alongside French and Spanish requires a strategic language learning routine. While juggling multiple subjects can be challenging, the metalinguistic awareness gained from a polyglot stack can support your overall development. To ensure success within a tight timeframe, such as three weeks, learners must balance their activation speed in spoken languages with the specific technical requirements of British Sign Language.
