Discover the origin of Louis Vuitton, from his 300-mile walk to Paris to his apprenticeship with Monsieur Marechal during the French Industrial Revolution.

Louis’s genius wasn't just in making things pretty; it was in making them work better for a world that was moving faster than ever before.
History of Louis Vuitton focusing on the founder's humble beginnings as a trunk-maker and the early evolution of the brand.

Louis Vuitton's journey began in 1835 when he left his home in Anchay at the age of thirteen. To escape a difficult home life, he traveled nearly 300 miles on foot toward Paris, a grueling trek that took two years. During this time, he worked as a carpenter to survive, eventually arriving in Paris in 1837 during the Industrial Revolution to begin his career as an apprentice.
Monsieur Marechal was a master box-maker in Paris who took Louis Vuitton on as an apprentice when Louis arrived in the city at age sixteen. Under Marechal's guidance, Louis spent seventeen years mastering the respected craft of box-making. This specialized trade involved creating custom protection for the fragile and elaborate fashions worn by the elite, providing the foundation for Louis's future in luxury fashion history.
In the mid-nineteenth century, box-making was a highly respected craft rather than a simple manufacturing task. As Paris underwent the Industrial Revolution, there was a high demand for custom-made containers to protect the expensive and delicate clothing of the upper class. Louis Vuitton's apprenticeship in this field allowed him to develop the technical skills and attention to detail that would eventually define his namesake luxury brand.
