Nia: Hey there, welcome to today's episode. I'm Nia, and I'm joined by my friend and colleague Jackson. Today we're diving into a topic that's deeply personal for many of our listeners - Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, or PSC. Jackson, I know we've received several requests to cover this condition, especially after one of our listeners recently shared their diagnosis.
Jackson: Absolutely, Nia. And first, I want to say to anyone who's recently been diagnosed with PSC - I know how overwhelming it can feel to hear those words from your doctor. It's a rare liver disease that many people, even some medical professionals, aren't familiar with.
Nia: That's right. And what struck me while researching this topic is that PSC often doesn't announce itself loudly. Many people are completely asymptomatic when they're diagnosed, right? They go in for routine blood work, and suddenly they're facing terms like "bile ducts" and "cholangitis."
Jackson: Exactly. About 1 in 10,000 people worldwide have PSC, but what makes it particularly challenging is its unpredictability. The disease progression varies dramatically from person to person. Some might need a liver transplant within a few years, while others live decades with minimal symptoms.
Nia: And there's currently no cure, which I know can sound frightening. But that doesn't mean there aren't ways to manage the condition and maintain quality of life. You know what really surprised me? The average time from diagnosis to needing a transplant is actually 15-20 years, and some people never need one at all.
Jackson: That's such an important point. A PSC diagnosis isn't a death sentence - it's the beginning of a different journey. Let's explore what exactly happens in the body with PSC and how people can navigate life after diagnosis.
