Discover the untold stories of female leaders like Sybil Ludington, who rode forty miles during the American Revolution to warn of a British attack on Danbury.

The stories we tell shape our understanding of who is capable of leadership and bravery. When we erase women like Sybil, we lose half the map of human courage.
The Forgotten Women Who Changed History

Sybil Ludington was a sixteen-year-old girl who performed a heroic forty-mile ride on the night of April 26, 1777. Riding through rain and dangerous terrain in New York and Connecticut, she warned the colonial militia of an impending British attack on Danbury. Her bravery and tenacity allowed hundreds of troops to mobilize by dawn, proving her to be a vital yet often overlooked figure in the Revolutionary War.
While Paul Revere is a household name for his twenty-mile ride, Sybil Ludington rode twice that distance at nearly half his age. Navigating forty miles of rain-soaked darkness, she had to avoid British patrols and outlaws while alerting local men to gather for defense. Despite her ride being longer and arguably more dangerous than Revere's, she is frequently reduced to a footnote in historical narratives.
Studying women like Sybil Ludington is essential because the stories we tell shape our understanding of leadership and bravery. When female contributors are sidelined or erased from the historical record, we lose a significant portion of the map of human courage. Recognizing these women helps correct historical erasure and provides a more complete view of the individuals who made social progress and scientific contributions possible.
