The French Revolution didn't just 'give' equality—it created the space where equality could be demanded, moving past the 'nobility of the skin' toward a vision where the sun would shine only on free men.
French Revolution. French colonialism. did they view French and African equally ?

On February 4, 1794, the National Convention officially decreed the end of slavery across the French colonies. This historic turning point granted French citizenship and full constitutional rights to every man living in the colonies, regardless of their skin color. The event was celebrated in Paris at the Temple of Reason, formerly the Notre Dame Cathedral, marking a peak moment of universalist and multiracial equality during the revolution.
The delegation from Saint-Domingue, modern-day Haiti, was a tricolor trio that represented the revolutionary ideal of equality. It included Louis Dufay, a white planter; Jean-Baptiste Mills, a free man of color; and Jean-Baptiste Belley, a formerly enslaved Black army officer. Their arrival and seating as equals in the National Convention was a cinematic and massive turning point for the French Revolution's stance on human rights.
The French Revolution redefined citizenship by breaking racial barriers through the 1794 decree. The National Convention declared that all men residing in the colonies were French citizens entitled to all rights guaranteed by the constitution. This shift was exemplified by the public praise of Black citizens as courageous equals and the transformation of the Notre Dame Cathedral into the Temple of Reason to celebrate these universalist values.
