    Una idea es un concepto vago y general, como imaginar un mundo donde nadie duerme. En cambio, una premisa es el motor de la historia porque le añade estructura; es una frase que combina un personaje, un conflicto y un propósito. Por ejemplo, transformar la idea del insomnio en una premisa sería: "un detective que no puede dormir debe resolver un crimen antes de perder la cordura". La premisa funciona como un contrato con el lector y establece una dirección clara para la narrativa.

    La estructura de los tres actos es un método de organización que divide la historia en planteamiento, nudo y desenlace. En el primer acto se presenta la normalidad del personaje hasta que un incidente incitador la rompe. El segundo acto o nudo consiste en una serie de obstáculos donde la tensión debe ir en aumento. El tercer acto es el clímax y la resolución, donde el conflicto principal se resuelve de forma lógica. Para un principiante, seguir este "mapa" o esquema evita bloqueos creativos y ayuda a mantener un ritmo constante sin perderse en el desarrollo.

    Para que un personaje sea memorable debe ser "redondo", lo que significa que debe tener contradicciones, virtudes y defectos. En lugar de centrarse solo en el aspecto físico, el autor debe definir sus miedos, deseos profundos y motivaciones. Un personaje perfecto no genera empatía; el lector conecta con aquellos que dudan o cometen errores. Además, es fundamental que el personaje tenga un "arco", es decir, que experimente un cambio interno o una evolución como consecuencia de los eventos vividos en la historia.

    Una técnica efectiva es saltar a una escena diferente que se tenga más clara, ya que no es obligatorio escribir en orden cronológico. También se recomienda la "escritura libre", que consiste en escribir sin parar durante diez minutos sin juzgar la calidad. Para combatir la autocensura, es vital separar al "escritor" del "editor": durante el primer borrador, el objetivo es simplemente que la historia exista, dejando las correcciones gramaticales y de estilo para una etapa posterior. La constancia y el establecimiento de metas pequeñas, como un número mínimo de palabras al día, son más efectivos que esperar a la inspiración divina.

    Existen principalmente tres caminos: la publicación tradicional, la autopublicación y la publicación híbrida. En la tradicional, una editorial se encarga de la corrección, diseño y distribución, aunque es un proceso lento y selectivo. La autopublicación en plataformas como Amazon da control total al autor sobre el precio y el diseño, pero le exige encargarse de toda la promoción. La publicación híbrida es un punto medio donde se colabora con editoriales pequeñas. Independientemente del camino elegido, es fundamental presentar un manuscrito limpio, profesional y registrado legalmente.
