Para combatir la autocensura, es vital separar al "escritor" del "editor": durante el primer borrador, el objetivo es simplemente que la historia exista, dejando las correcciones gramaticales y de estilo para una etapa posterior. La constancia y el establecimiento de metas pequeñas, como un número mínimo de palabras al día, son más efectivos que esperar a la inspiración divina.
Existen principalmente tres caminos: la publicación tradicional, la autopublicación y la publicación híbrida. En la tradicional, una editorial se encarga de la corrección, diseño y distribución, aunque es un proceso lento y selectivo.
